HIC’s Stainless Steel Nutmeg Grater makes easily work of grating whole nutmeg. The nutmeg seed’s hardened exterior requires a sturdy grater to harvest its warm, exotic aroma and flavor. Ground nutmeg is most aromatic when prepared immediately before use. Grate the amount you need and store the seed, whole, in an airtight container to retain its flavor indefinitely. HIC’s Nutmeg Grater easily rakes and granulates the surface of the nutmeg seed. Place the nutmeg seed against the grater while steading its flattened bottom against a countertop or tabletop for a more vigorous grating action. Quickly grate nutmeg, and other spices and seasonings, for tastier baking recipes and comforting home cooking. Use ground nutmeg for making spiced tea, hot chocolate, mulled cider, or egg nog, even savory dishes, like moussaka. HIC’s Nutmeg Grater performs the tasks of multiple kitchen tools to make food preparation a breeze. It doubles nicely for grating cinnamon sticks and block chocolate, and works well as a ginger grater, or for preparing lemon zest, breadcrumbs, and a cheese grater for hard cheese, like Asiago, Parmesan, Pecorino or Romano. The Grater’s narrow end easily fits into a pinch bowl or mug to collect grated ingredients. The Grater is small enough or grate directly over foods to deliver flavor and finishing touches exactly where needed. HIC’s Nutmeg Grater is made from stainless steel for durability and resistance to rust. It’s compact and hangs for easy storage. Easy to clean, just wash in warm, soapy water. Dislodge food bits with a soft-bristle brush.

HIC Harold Import Co HIC Nutmeg Grater, Stainless Steel
Stainless steel and a good quality spice grinder grater thing for nutmeg and similar things. Far better than the cheap aluminum or zinc or lesser quality alloys one finds in most shops or elsewhere online. Definitely good quality stainless, looks like 316 but there's no stainless stamp indicating grade ( so really not sure of the alloy ). I have some old Japanese forged Molybdenum mid century Dion Lucas knives still in use, never rusted and still shiny like new other than wear on the wooden handles and some scuffs from sharpening, normal use and being stored loose in a drawer sometimes. While this grater is made from thinly rolled, stamped and pressed sheet, the quality of the stainless itself is somewhat similar to Mo stainless which is why I think it resembles 316. It's extremely sharp on the grating business end and it grates through nutmeg with ease, smooth as butter, and grates to a fine powder. Handle with care, it's sharp.. This grater is not like other graters on the market of lesser quality and duller grate. The storage compartment is a bit small for a large unground nut. I never use the compartment for storage anyway with this style grater. I keep the grater in a small shallow ceramic or wooden bowl, along with two or three pieces of nutmeg, on the spice shelf or prep table. I've used this type of grater my entire life. This one is better quality than most that are sold these days, and at a good price too, all things considered. Give this one a try. If you know you like this style grater, you'll probably like the performance that this one offers; super sharp and grates to fine dust and powder.

Great Grater!
Just like the nutmeg grater I had for almost 40 years. The only reason we had to replace that one is because we lost it in a house fire. I was so pleased to see they still make it! Perfect for grabbing out of the cupboard when you need grated nutmeg because you've always got the nutmeg "nut" stored right in the top. No looking for the jar of nutmeg and the microplane, and since I only use it for nutmeg, unlike my microplane, I don't have to wash the nutmeg dust off of it after I use it. Yes, the grating holes are sharp, that's the whole point! Someone said it ground "inconsistently." So does every other grater, unless you are a robot and can hold the nutmeg at a precise angle and use exactly the same amount of pressure. Some people said it was very small and some one said the grating area was only about an inch and a half. Not sure what grater they were talking about because this one is certainly big enough. I've attached a picture of me holding it and I promise you my hands are average size- not freakishly small. I noticed the package said you can use it to grate ginger, hard cheeses, lemon zest, etc. Personally, I would never use this for any of those items- because I think a microplane would do a much better job, and be easier to clean. But after we lost our original nutmeg grinder I did use my microplane for my nutmeg and of course it worked, but this is so much nicer to use in my opinion. Plus it has that cute vintage look! (I started using a grater like this 40 years ago. Maybe that means I'm not looking old- I've just got that fashionable cute vintage look!)

Lousy lid on this grater
Seemed like a good idea but you can't store the nutmeg in this because the lid has no spring closure. Immediately I had to look for a rubber band to keep the lid closed and keep the nutmeg from rolling out. I just ended up throwing it out. What a waste.

Its quite serviceable
This works just fine. It is built exactly like the old ones but made of a lighter weight stainless steel instead of steel So its not as heavy. But it grates nutmeg just fine. Don't hesitate. It will work for you.

A kitchen essential
I adore fresh ground nutmeg and this is the perfect vehicle for that. The all metal construction is sturdy and the teeth easily grate nutmeg, allspice or any other hard spice like cinnamon. It hangs on the kitchen wall and is always handy. My only criticism is that the storage compartment on the top is too small for many nutmegs. The lid won't close until I've grated enough nutmeg to shrink it to fit. For that shortcoming I'll deduct one star. Otherwise this is a keeper. BTW, fresh nutmeg beats the pants off the tinned stuff. I like to grate a bit into my morning tea. Also, fresh nutmeg makes homemade spaetzle positively divine!

Easy
It needs to have closer that doesn't open.

Poor quality, but would probably get the job done
I was highly disappointed in the quality of this nutmeg grater. The photographs of the grater do not match the product I received. The lid of the one I received can barely be forced shut, and it appears to be made of a slightly different material than the body of the grater. The edge of the lid is wavy and shoddy. The grater holes are inconsistently punched out, with a few massive holes and many places where the punch did not go through at all. I think it would be functional to grate nutmeg, but I like to use high-quality kitchen implements that are a joy to use, and this does not measure up at all.

Mine is not as sharp but it works just great. I also like the fact that I can ...
I bought this for my niece. It is really sharp. I have one that is probably 70 to 90 years old. Mine is not as sharp but it works just great. I also like the fact that I can keep one whole nutmeg in the top for, quick use. Will not hold a real large one.

I am happy with it
This product is exactly as I had hoped. It has the small compartment to hold the nutmeg, with a little hinged door on top. I am happy with it.
