They work - sort of.
I have serious arthritic damage in both big toe joints. One was rebuilt about 7 years back, and I was told that the surgery would last for a couple of decades - but no. The right toe needs to be fused, but in my mid 50's, they want me to wait as long as I can take it, before that happens. So I bought a pair of these, and a full length set of carbon fiber orthotics. These are attached to a felt foot bed, which helps keep them in place. The downside is that it makes them thick, which means that your shoe gets significantly tighter. Fortunately, I have an oversize pair of loafers that these fit in well. They work, but in a well fitted shoe, you will need to remove the insole, which means that you will not have arch support. They are not heavy, and I live in the desert so cold feet are not a problem. They keep my toes from flexing to much, and right away, I could feel the deference - less pain and thus damage. The problem is that they will only fit my loafers. These would not be functional for a good fitting shoe. I wouldn't buy these again in this configuration. I would get the full foot version if they didn't come with the felt. A thin steel plate underneath the insole would work better, and be much cheaper than the carbon fiber versions. Make a version in full foot size, and get rid of the felt, and I would buy it. They don't weigh much more than the carbon fiber, and are SO much more affordable. You listening Aetna?
