AquaClear 20 Foam Filter Inserts are replacement filter media for the AquaClear 20 Power Filter. The AquaClear 20 Foam Filter Insert is a mechanical filter media that effectively removes particles and debris from aquarium water. It also prevents particulate waste from prematurely clogging other media in the filter. Primarily a mechanical filtration media, it also provides powerful biological filtration as friendly bacteria eventually grow inside its pore structure. Exclusively designed for the AquaClear 20 Power Filter, the Foam Inserts are safe for fresh and saltwater aquariums. AquaClear creates a wide variety of products for freshwater tanks such as fish tank accessories, fish tank decorations, and aquarium filter media that is perfect for large and small fish tanks.

Functional
I bought these to slow down my filter to be safer for my shrimp! I cut a hole in a chunk of one of these sponges and slid it over the intake tube of my filter, so baby shrimp won't get sucked in through the holes. It's ugly because you can see the dirt on the white sponge, but functionality is what I was more concerned about. I also wedged another chunk over the output of my filter to fan out the flow so there is less of a current, so my shrimp can swim without being propelled into the wall. This sponge has pores that are kind of wide, but still make my filter safer, and I still have extra. It doesn't affect the filter's ability. (For reference I'm using a Tetra brand Whisper filter.)

Thick Filter
I wanted to install this with my Aqua Tech hanging back filter which is a 3 stage filtration. However, the filter is too thick in which I cut it in half so I had room for my other filter pad and biological ceramic bag. Not a big deal if you have a bigger filter. It does the job and that's what makes the fish happy. So far I would recommend this filter foam.

Works great
I like to change out my filters every couple of weeks. They are inexpensive so I can.

Fit as expected
I'm running an aqua clear 20 on a lightly planted 10 gallon tank. I replaced the carbon filter with a second sponge to have more bacterial filtering, and not absorb my fertilizer.

Great media!
This filter media is great! I bought my first pack from a local fish store a few months ago, and now that it's time to swap it out, I've decided to stick with the same brand. Buying it in multi-packs here is way cheaper than any LFS! I had this brand recommended to me to use in my Azoo Mignon 60 filter, and though I do need to cut the foam a bit to fit inside, I still couldn't be happier with it. It does the job wonderfully! I would definitely recommend this media even if you don't use Aqua Clear filters. You can even see the good bacteria cultures forming on it- that tan/gold stuff that builds up over time isn't just tank waste. However, in order to enjoy the full benefit of a bacteria culture in your filter, pair the sponge with Aqua Clear's Biomax! I believe the Aqua Clear brand was recently acquired by Fluval. I have seen new packaging with the Fluval logo claiming it is the same thing as the Aqua Clear, so if you can't pick this up online but see the Fluval stuff in your LFS, it's -probably- the same thing.
