Possibly the perfect hiking short

I am a stickler when it comes to my hiking gear, and a bit of a gear geek. Since my favorite pair of hiking shorts finally bit the dust (actually melted, but that's another story ????) I have been looking for the right replacement. They needed to be very lightweight, gusseted crotch as a lot of our hiking includes scrambles requiring freedom of movement, stay where they're supposed to (the belt is perfect and will not open up under a pack belt - unlike some others I've had), have cargo pocket(s) but must be low profile (for map carry primarily and occasionally a hat or gloves - but I hate big bellowed pockets), and are attractive (added bonus - they come in a number of nice colors, not just tan and grey like so many others). These nailed it on all accounts. Don't know why I never gave Columbia a try before now. I always wrote them off as the mass marketed, big box stores brand of hiking gear, and maybe they are, but if these shorts are indicative of their brand then I'm a convert. These things are perfect!

Crotch not as roomy as it looks. Cargo pockets are flat.

From the photos, these appear to be slightly high-waisted. However, that is not the case. I am 5'10" and wear a 32" waist. I have to wear these very low on the waist in order to sit comfortably, to prevent a death grip on my crotch. I would return them but Dickies are the only high-rise shorts I know, but those are thick and not suited for warm weather. The description says the cargo pockets fold out and are 3D, but there is only pleating on the bottom. The sides of the cargo pockets do not have pleating, effectively making them flush against the legs and not roomy. The lining of the side and back pockets are see-through mesh, like a gym ball bag. All pocket flaps are fastened with a small square of velcro. I can't comment on durability as I have not really put them through any trials. They are very lightweight and great for hot weather. I look forward to hiking in them. The fabric seems to breathe well.

Look great and perform well. Excellent value.

I just love these shorts. Light material for hot summer days, and they fit me just right. I love that you can get them in tall sizes with the extra 2 inch inseam, as I've always liked my shorts a little longer. I own 3 different colors. Had to talk myself into stopping there. Lol. Good price as well. Plus they come with this great little built in belt. Every bit as good as shorts from other outdoor companies that cost 2-3x as much. They look excellent and perform just as well. Highly recommend.

Quick dry, soft, light, comfortable and compact. Very suitable for outdoor activities.

Use mainly for casual wear, golf, travel and hiking. Like it as it is made of quick dry material, it is also soft, light comfortable, and compact (thin and hence can be easily and conveniently folded and packed into my duffel bag). Only suggestion is for Columbia to make the pockets deeper to prevent coins falling off and also pocket being picked.

Comfortable, fit as advertised, durable

I wore these shorts, almost exclusively, on an18 day sea kayaking trip. They got wet while kayaking, muddy while setting up primitive camp, and put up with a lot of wear and tear. The shorts came through in good shape. When I finished the trip, the shorts were washed, and still look like they will last a long time. The short dry really fast after kayaking. They are comfortable. I recommend these shorts for rugged outdoor use.

Unlike the last guy I actually read the sizing chart. Its kind of unrealistic to think that all clothes are sized the same way. Use the sizing chart to find your actual waste measurement and you will be fine. The shorts themselves are great. Very light weight and ready for summer heat. I tend to run really warm so summer is hell for me. Further it seems most "shorts" in department stores are getting longer and heavier with each new year. I am actually going to buy a couple more of these because they are what shorts should be. There are lots of great pockets that dont add bulk because they are lined with a light weight mesh including a very convenient extra side pocket with a zipper. I did toss the belt though, its just for show and offers no function whatsoever with a buckle completely made of plastic. I still give it 5 stars though.

I'm a fan of these shorts

I received the wrong size at first, but a replacement was sent quickly. I fist bought a pair at a Columbia store. I liked them so much that I ordered two more pairs in different colours on Amazon. It is the same product as you would get in store. Great light material. It's perfect for outdoors activies (hiking, camping, etc.). It comes with its own belt. It dries fast. No regrets.

Cooling and lightweight. Great for those hot summer days.

These shorts are excellent to keep you cool as they are very lightweight. The belt is a bonus too. They clean easy but I would highly advise that the shorts should be hung up immediately once the dryer is finished to lessen the chance of wrinkles.
