Great insert, holds well in wood if you do it right. The insert I used was 1/4-20 15/16 long
I did a test where I drilled the recommend hole and pressed in one insert into some maple and I moved over 3 inches and put some 5 minute epoxy in between and a light film on the knurl. I pressed this in and let it cure for 3 days. I inserted a 1/4-20 hex head bolt in 2" long and tightened the bolt down slowly. The insert held fairly well at first but eventually pulled right out. I moved over the in insert with the epoxy on it and I turned the bolt down and it started to get fairly stiff to turn. I kept turning and then I heard a pop and the thought that the insert came lose. No, it was the back side of the 1" maple creaking out as I screwed it down. The flat ended bolt split the maple about 3 inches before I saw any of the bolt. The insert is still in the board as strong as the day I put it in the male hole. There great insert and I feel that under the right circumstances and installation Technic will work very well in wood and not just plastic. Ten wahoo's the the folks who designed this insert. Great job!

Works great on 3D prints and you may not even need a special tool!
The outside diameter of the top of these inserts, the end you press against, is 9.6mm. That's a tad wider than my soldering iron with its tip removed. I can set them perfectly without using any special-purpose soldering iron tips. I still use the 6mm tip from myShineNow Heat-set Insert Tips because I have them anyway. And, as long as we're talking dimensions, the inserts are 7.6mm long. You will, of course, want to make sure you are putting them into something at least that thick. Also, the diameter of the bottom end, the end that goes into the plastic first, is 9mm, should that be useful to your design.

Great For 3D Printed Camera Accessories
I've 3D printed a few camera accessories such as tripod adapters and used these. They're the perfect length for standard tripod screws.

These Excellent for 3D Prints
The media could not be loaded. These are perfect for installing 1/4-20 threads in 3D prints, love them. To install I just use a soldering iron @ 380C and press them in place. I've purchased them several times with no issues.
