Got an oil fired boiler and want a digital thermostat? Look no further...
Finally, a digital thermostat for my oil fired boiler! If you have an oil fired hot water boiler and radiant floor heat then this product is for you. What you'll likely find out is that these systems use 'line voltage' and not 'low voltage' as many oil furnace systems use. I'm pretty handy around the house, and I thought I was pretty well educated on home thermostats. Oil furnaces and boilers all use low voltage to run a thermostat, right? Well, nooooooo, they don't. I was surprised to learn that after buying a plain old digital thermostat to replace my analog dial mercury switch. Pretty much every thermostat at a big box retailer is going to be low voltage because that's the most common. When I stuck one of those on my wall it did pretty much nothing (and may have gotten damaged in the process, though thankfully there were no whips of smoke billowing out). So, I pulled out my voltage meter and did a quick check and found out, "holy crap this is 120v AC." Hence began my internet search for a 120v thermostat. Come to find out, the 120v, or 'line voltage' system isn't too common. I wasn't able to find many thermostats that would fit my application, and many were specifically for electric baseboard heating. A bit more research brought me to the Lux ELV4. Finally, I had found what I was looking for. This is a very solid piece of hardware, and priced pretty competitively with low voltage models (though being more common they are generally cheaper). The ELV4 provides separate programming for weekday and weekend use. You can set two morning temps and two evening temps which generally cover 'wake up', 'go to work', 'return from work', and 'go to bed'. The clock display can also be set to show 12 or 24 hours. I have no doubt that the precise control of this unit will far exceed the performance of the old mercury switch (which most building codes don't allow for these days anyway). I'm going to watch my oil bill, but I'm betting I'll be spending less now that we can more finely control the temperature in the home and avoid the 'thermostat tennis' habit. So with all the great features, I wish there was one thing that could have been included - a back-light. You're going to have to turn on your room or hallway light if you want to see the display in the dark. A darn shame since that's really the only nit I have with the unit. I would give my review 4.5 stars if possible, but since I have to choose 4 or 5 I'll still go 5 because the rest of the unit is so solid. Finally, a word of advise, READ THE DIRECTIONS when you install. Yes, the wiring is pretty obvious (line voltage 'in' is red and 'load' out is black), but there are a couple things that can bite you if you don't RTDT. Obviously, there is a front panel that flips down to allow you to get to the programming options. What is NOT so obvious is that the face of the unit separates from the back mounting plate and there are MORE options BEHIND the face of the unit. Specifically, there is an on/off switch for the heat which can be used during the summer when you don't want the unit to turn on at all. The thermostat is shipped with the switch in the OFF position, so if you don't turn it ON you may think you have a DOA thermostat. Also, there are two 'dip' switches on the back to set the temp to either Fahrenheit or Celsius, as well as for the 12 or 24 hour clock. I'm attaching a picture of the thermostat with the optional trim plate (sold separately) for your viewing pleasure. Happy heating!

Newest revision moved on/off switch under front plate
Newest revision moved on/off switch under front plate, meaning you have to take the unit off the backplate to access the on/off switch which used to be easily accessible on the side of the unit. I have used these over the years in every room in my house. The majority are revision c, they lasted at least 9-10 years so far. One of them was not clicking off and world keep running recently. Ordered the replacement off Amazon and it is now revision e, which has the on/off switch moved to the backplate that is only accessible by removing the unit from the backplate. Other than that inconvenience, it is working good.

Easy Find
Great product. Fantastic about finding a replacement for my broken unit.

The interface is a bit annoying, but it does the job.
We have an older home with an old but functional boiler system that has three circulation pumps. After doing some research, we came to realize that we needed a line voltage heat-only thermostat. Boy, there aren't a lot of those out there. We had to choose between this one and a Honeywell model, but the Honeywell had poor reviews. Honestly, we were reluctant to buy this one because we already had it for 2 out of our 3 zones and they're annoying to program. Despite this annoyance, the thermostat was pretty easy to install and is functioning perfectly (so far). We're pleased with the purchase. The back of our house is much more comfortable now that we have this unit installed. The swing time on the old unit was unbearable -- the zone was always either too hot or too cold.

Perfect Thermostat for Cadet Wall Units with Enclosed Fan.
If you have a Cadet wall unit with integrated fan, this thermostat is for you! My previous Honeywell unit even when configured in "fan mode" had the heater cycling on and off every couple of minutes (the Honeywell unit works great with electric baseboard heat). The LUX ELV4 solved the problem. It is the only electric heat thermostat that I have found that has a "swing setting". This enables you to set a spread of temperature before the heater/fan will cycle. On setting 1, the temp can only vary about 1/4 of a degree before the thermostat energizes the heater. On setting ten the swing is approximately 2 1/2 degrees before the heater/fan goes on and off. For my needs I've found that setting 3 allows a variation of 3/4 to one degree before starting the heating process. With that setting the heater energizes for about 8-10 minutes every half hour or so. Perfect for my needs. You may have to experiment with the setting bit to get it right for your climate and building construction and heat retention. One other note, when the thermostat turns the heater on OR off, it will stay that way for 5 minutes before the thermostat allows it to cycle again. This is to prevent unnecessary switching of your heating system. Should help preserve the life of the fan in this application. It makes no difference in electric baseboard heat. There is an audible click but it does not bother me. Also, the model I got does not have the ON/OFF switch that is accessible without removing the cover. It must be a left over older version. This is a minor inconvenience . Love this thing.

Work as advertised...
Yes this does work with 110V type lines in this case to a warehouse overhead gas heater - replaced two very old manual ones. A couple notes: The front and back parts are separate halves. Removing the front, take care to push on the bottom tab rather than force it - that tab broke for me and I had to McGiver it not to fall off after that. You *do* need to remove that front part to flick the "ON" switch that is default OFF. Also, battery on one of the units didn't connect to the rather shallow metal pads it is up against. I put a piece of thick paper into the space at the other side of the battery pack and it contacts fine now. Programming is simple, same as any other device except you rotate a program/run dial to initiate that. No manual required for that. Also, it does require two AA cells in case that's not obvious - it wasn't to me from the marketing.
