For any reenactor used to dealing with GDFB and indian made armor it is a great buy.
I managed to nab this for $118 via a fluke of amazon's pricing algorithm and at that price 6/5 stars. For $300 I'd be pissed as a man off the street looking for a costume and as a reenactor and HEMA practitioner I'd give it a firm meh. firm 3.5/5 at it's normal market price. Riveting is inconsistent with some barely peened, there is a segment of repair where some solid links are riveted links in the body, and some riveted links are missing rivets. It came well oiled, enough that I let it rest on a few towels to drain the excess for a few days, and rust free. Links have a nice dark appearance that should be moderately rust resistant. For any living history or combat reenactor used to dealing with GDFB and indian made armor it is a great buy. It is greasy, it has sharp edges, and needs extensive modification and the skillsets for such to look and fit historically. Exactly why I bought it and exactly why it and most armor grade maille on amazon gets poor revues from cosplayers, costumers, or larpers. For the good: This haubergeon, especially the large version, is an immensely good project for someone looking to tailor a suit of maille. GDFB and Lord of Battles sell the riveted links separately, so you can tailor their products and as suspect rivets blow during use I'll just repair them. Already I took it down to 44" chest with a lace up front, will remove about a foot of length to take it to the upper thigh, and will narrow and add an expansion gusset to the sleeves. I should have several square feet of riveted maille to play with after it's all said and done for other projects like voiders for my plate harness. I intend to make it the basis of a light HEMA kit mimicking light infantry in padded jacks over maille like in the St. Ursula altarpiece.
