Breaks every year
Two years ago the ice auger in my GE refrigerator broke so I went looking for a new one. Of course my model, GZS22DSJEFSS, seemed to have the most expensive replacement ice auger but I needed a new one so I figured the OEM part should be worth the expense. It took about 30 minutes to remove and replace the ice auger, watch the youtube video and take pictures so you don't mess up. But almost exactly 1 year later the plastic blades of the auger broke again. So I bought another replacement...almost exactly one year later it breaks the same way again. I use the ice dispenser multiple times every day and never use any sort of "ice pick" to break up the ice. it is unacceptable that this part should break after so little time.

Take “Before” Pictures!
This auger does not come with instructions. It is fiddly as hell to install. Requires complete disassembly of the ice dispenser to remove the bushing clip at the front of the box to release old auger and install new one. Take photos of everything before you disassemble. Hope it holds up so I never have to mess with it again. Took me about 30 min to complete the job. Works perfectly now.

Expensive, but OEM
Most GE icemakers come with 2 auger lengths. The long one is $10 and the short one is $50 on Amazon. Of course I needed the short one. It was a bear to install but fit perfectly.

Make sure you keep track of the washers and spacers
buying this part and putting it in myself was definitely cheaper than a service call. It wasn't terribly difficult. Trickiest part was keeping about five washer/spacers in the right place when reassembling with the new part. Definitely somehow record where they came from but be sure to have the "blow-up" picture from the manual/instructions handy, in case you lose track. Note also that in my case, the original piece of equipment didn't have the same number of spacers as the diagram. My careful attention to how it came apart saved me.

Something to definitely DIY..
Decided to purchase and DIY and great decision. Saved about 400.00 on having someone fix it for me..

Original and replacement broke in the same way
Original and replacement broke the same way. Only had replacement for just over 6 months and again, small pieces of plastic breaking off the auger. This piece should not be made with plastic. Very hazardous. GE needs to design this piece better.
