PRODUCT DESCRIPTION P-38 Lightning has a 40" wingspan. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a revolutionary fighter for the time with its tricycle landing gear, twin boom and turbo-superchargers. The first models were accepted by the Army Air Force in October 1941 and, by the end of the war, nearly 10,000 had rolled from the production lines. From introduction until 1945, many modifications were made in the original design to comply with the needs of the air services. On April 18, 1943, a flight of P-38's downed Japan's great naval strategist, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, while he was flying on an inspection tour of the Solomon Islands. Due to its unusual configuration, the Lightning was dubbed the "fork-tailed Devil" by the Luftwaffe and "two airplanes with one pilot" by the Japanese-grudging respect earned by its formidable appearance and reputation. • Series 2000 kits are some of the world's finest scale balsa model kits and contain the best quality materials and instructions • Designed as a large flying or Build 'N Show display model • Guillow's - your one source for model plane kits since 1926 • Made in the USA FROM THE MANUFACTURER Guillow's is the recognized leader in quality scale balsa model airplane kits. Quick little run down
Super excited to build this! The model is die crush, not laser cut. The balsa wood quality seems ok, However it could be better. Plastic parts look fine. Overall it looks solid. For those who don’t know or have had built this model before, some parts have been removed because they are simply outdated.

not for beginners but impressive
this is not for beginners. lots of plastic parts though they are necessary to achieve the look of the plane. the instructions are sometimes not at all clear though there is an online place with pictures of construction for some clarification. the look of the constructed body pieces is impressive.

MY OPINONS.
First of all I would recommend 3/32 stringers for this airplane! 2nd - the plastic pieces that cover the wings do not fit! 3rd - setting up the cockpit for the pilot is not pleasent! 4th - Stamping out the knotches by machine tends to make them way too big for 1/l6 stringers. I have allready completed the C-47, B-25, B-24 and the three F-15, F-16 and F-18 and they were fun to build - the P-38 was pain in the butt. I am now working on a B-17 and it is going well. I am 80 years old now and my father and brother were fond of airplanes and made many models. Its just a hobby for me and I most often give them away. I've tried other folks and Guillows is the best (except for the P-38). Signed: Bob Griffith

Awesome kit
Probably will be a kit i'll have to take my time with but it's a quality product with lots and lots of detail. I'm looking forward to starting.

It's pretty early to be reviewing the kit
It's pretty early to be reviewing the kit, because I'm only about 1/2 built. The parts all seem to be there and the directions are extensive, if not always clear to an old guy who hasn't built a stick plane in 30 or 40 years. Having a great time!
