Video Gaming-Themed Greetings Complete with a Starfield of 29 LEDs and Retro Techno Gaming Music

This review is for the HALLMARK Paper Wonder Musical Pop-Up Card with Lights (Video Games). I received a free taxable sample of this pop-up card to review in my search for a birthday card for a video gaming-themed birthday party. The pop-up card and matching blue envelope arrived in a decorated cardboard top loader with Hallmark Paper Wonder branding. In its folded state, the card measures 9" across at its widest and 6 1/8" from the bottom of the card base to the top of the "Game On" sign. Squeezing the card base up unfolds the card into its pop-up state with a wide hexagon base (long diameter 6 1/2", short diameter 4 1/4") while still maintaining a vertical height of 6 1/8" as measured from the base of the platform to the top of the "Game On" sign. The exterior of the pop-up is constructed of decent cardstock and the pop-up has an overall weight of 44 grams. The video gaming-themed design of this card centers around a large pop-up matte cardstock sign in the center that features the phrase "Game On" against a dark blue background with stars and lighter-colored squares. In front of this sign is a separate pop-up section of a large pro video game controller which itself is prefaced with a cutout of another standard video game controller rising from the front face of the pop-up. The back view of the central sign features only the dark blue background with stars and lighter-colored squares along with a 3" x 2 1/4" section on the rear face of the pop-up that reads "When it comes to being the best. You've got the high score." The phrase takes up around 1" of the vertical space in that section, leaving a 3" x 1 1/4" area for a personalized greeting and signature. The built-in video gaming-themed music and lightshow more than make up for the somewhat simple pop-up construction of this card. Pressing the cleverly worded "press here to start" button located on the front right of the card starts an approximately 20 second retro techno track that evokes memories of space invaders and classic arcade games. Accompanying this music is an impressive pulsating lightshow of 29 blue LEDs embedded into the dark blue background around "Game On". Overall, it wouldn't be a stretch to use this pop-up as a centerpiece on a cake or on a gifts table for a video game-themed occasion. The accompanying envelope is solid blue on the outside and solid aqua green on the inside. The Hallmark symbol is embossed onto the flap and the envelope measures 9 3/8" x 6 1/2" with a weight of 11 grams. There is a standard thickness and feel to the envelope and the glue strip on the inside flap is evenly coated. Overall, the HALLMARK Paper Wonder video game-themed pop-up card has a solid video gaming theme with an impressive starfield of LED lights and a fun retro gaming soundtrack. I would recommend this as a great greeting card option, especially if the recipient is an avid video gamer.

Great to give an older gamer…speaking as an older gamer.

The cardboard “card” on its own is kinda neat, but leaning a bit meh. And it’s really more of a pop-up diorama than a card. On the other hand, the retro 80s-90s tune this bass monster pumps out is the JAM, yo! Sounds like it easily belongs in an old 8-bit game.and will be very nostalgic for gamer recipients over a certain age. The pulsing LEDs (all blue) just take it to the next level. Comes protected in a thin cardboard envelope (similar to a small FedEx envelope).
