Can a work of art make you wet? This can
This is a complete system, probably best suited to remodeling your bathroom, or new construction. The reason for this is that some of the installation of the new valve goes on behind the wall of your shower, and there are some screws that are supposed to connect the back of the valve to the front. You can’t do this if you can’t get behind it. I found, though, that this isn’t essential. Now – overall impressions – wow. The showerhead is like a square with slightly rounded corners. Ditto, the trim plate that goes between the handle and the wall. Ditto, the trim that goes behind the tub spout. Stops built into the shower valve let you set the maximum temperature, so you can’t get burned by water that’s too hot. A ring also enables you to adjust the valve for showers with thick walls, and showers with thinner tile. It’s a nice feature. Unlike lesser shower valves that only let you select a temperature and have no control over the volume of water that is being used, the Hansgrohe lets you control both – if you want a shower with low flow of water – perhaps like a real soft rain – you can get it. If you want to be in a rainstorm, this will let you do that, too. There’s an issue if you do an upgrade. The shower valve and trim are designed for one hole. In many older showers (and maybe some newer ones) one valve controlled the hot water, and the other controlled the cold. After installing this valve, you’ll have two holes visible. You may also have to do some cutting between the valves to be able to attach to Hansgrohe valve to the pipes for the showerhead, the hot and cold pipes, and the pipe to the tub, if you have a tub. This can require a bit of work – and you may still have some ugly stuff at both sides of the trim. Fortunately, some plumbing supply shops (and probably plumbing big box stores, and maybe even Amazon, sell large plates that cover the other valves and any surgery that was done to connect water to the valve. There’s a button on the showerhead. This switches between rain and storm – press the button and you can wash soap out of your hair, or rinse yourself off – whatever you want to do. Because Hansgrohe realizes that if you used the showerhead as an add-on to an existing shower, they include a nine inch shower arm. This lets you move the showerhead away from the wall, so you can REALLY get under the rain. The chrome finish is impeccable. I’m really impressed. This shower/tub upgrade is probably better suited to a nicer tub – but I’m not complaining. One more thing – this uses a valve that is standard for Hansgrohe. It’s in the shower, it’s in the tubs, and it will accommodate any compatible trim. If you don’t want the squarish plate, you can replace it with a different shape or finish.

Ha! Gotta love German engineering
This is exactly what you'd expect from German engineering - beauty, meticulous, cast with precision, and attention to detail...but also strange little things, like different Allen wrench sizes for each darn screw. If you're not familiar, Hans Grohe founded this company in the early 20th century, and his son Frederick founded the company Grohe, which I'm more familiar with, maybe because they're based in the Chicago area where I lived for some time. Both are great companies, but nothing to do with each other. Hansgrohe also owns/operates Axor. Each item in this set comes in its own box, with its own instructions. I've done maybe a dozen shower installs/retrofits, and this was definitely in a class of its own, in a variety of ways. Everything was a little bit different/foreign, I've never had to read (or re-read) instructions for a shower fixture before LOL. The most complex thing was the pressure balance mechanism, and getting the settings just right. The instructions were very wordy, but everything eventually made sense. Also I wouldn't know where to begin retrofitting an existing shower with this (without access behind the wall), for most situations this is really best for new installs. The operation is smooth, durable, well built. The one touch control is awesome. I'm sure this thing will last for decades. My only concern was it had a California warning for lead. I couldn't find anything in the literature, on their web site, etc, about it being lead-free. But I examined everything closely, the components all appear to be brass or plastic (nylon). Maybe they put the warning sticker on as precautionary compliance? I believe the national max lead content for the US is 0.25%, so I'm not too concerned, especially since we're not drinking it. But still it gave me pause.

Nice shower set, just not nearly as nice as true Grohe
This is a very nice shower set, it is just not nearly as nice as a true Grohe set. I have heard good things about the Hansgrohe "budget" line recently. This does not disappoint, although it is noticeably not as nice as a regular Grohe set if you compare them side by side (this probably does not come across clearly in photos). The finish on this set just isn't as nice as the original Grohe, and it is not as easy to clean. That being said, I think this still looks great. The shower head on this set has an all plastic housing, but it does have two spray modes which is nice. The trim faceplate on this set is plastic, but the control knob is metal. I prefer it this way as opposed to the other way around (plastic knob, metal trim plate) as found on some of the newer Grohe sets. As I mentioned, the finish looks great right now -- time will tell how well it holds up, especially on the plastic pieces. This is a complete shower kit, so it includes everything except the piping. You do not need to purchase a separate rough in box, or anything like that. In summary, the price is definitely less than a comparable Grohe set, although the quality definitely feels inferior (very slightly so, most noticeable when comparing side by side).
