PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Heath Zenith HZ-4192-BK Six-Sided Die-Cast Aluminum Lantern, Black with Beveled Glass AMAZON.COM Motion-activated lights are convenient and energy efficient, but they can be a little bulky and awkward to look at-in the driveway is fine, but you wouldn't want to put one on your porch. Unless it's one of Heath Zenith's porch lights, that is. These products give you the best of both worlds, combining motion-activation and traditional outdoor-light design. The SL-4192 is a six-sided wall-mount lantern that includes a hidden motion-sensing device that detects movement in a 180-degree radius up to a distance of 30 feet. You can set the light timer to one, five, or ten minutes, and the sensor itself may be adjusted to give you more or less sensitivity (so it doesn't light up every time a car drives by). The weather-resistant aluminum construction means it's going to look good for a while, too. This model also features "Dual Brite" lighting, which means you can use it for low-level accent lighting in addition to the full-light effect you get with motion-activation. An included timer allows you to set low-light mode for three hours, six hours, or dusk to dawn (an automatic photocell deactivates the unit in daylight). You can also turn the light on and off at will via the manual override that mounts to an existing indoor switch. If you're looking to save a little money on outdoor lighting by installing a motion-detector, this is a great option that won't look out of place. Requires one medium-based bulb of up to 100 watts (not included). --Josh Dettweiler What's in the Box Lamp housing, motion detector FROM THE MANUFACTURER 6-Sided Die-Cast Lantern With Beveled Glass See more

Good product but switches do corrode over time
I've purchased several of these over the 20 years I've owned my home. They generally work well and, once you install and set them up, they are a "set and forget" product. Except for one thing. That one thing is that the switches they use in these lights do tend to corrode in place over time and if you ever have to change settings on them the switches are locked into place. Even when I get them un-stuck, moving them is still difficult and I've had to replace the entire unit each time that happens since they are now stuck ON all the time or not set the way I want them. They are not super cheap so replacing two at a time is more money than I really want to spend especially since the fixture still works. It's just the switches that have gone bad. This has happened several times over the years so it's not an isolated incident. I even complained to the manufacturer and they admitted this is a problem and are working on it. They sent replacements even though I was out of warranty too so they know this is a problem. It's a decent product with that one switch flaw. If they get that to be more robust it would easily be a 5 star product though I do keep buying them anyway! I recommend them but definitely want you to know you'll have to watch those switches and spray them with contact cleaner on a regular basis and move them back and forth to prevent them from locking in place.

Model change
Somehow the original design needed the older incandescent bulbs because it pulled current through the bulb to run but not enough to turn it on. LEDs just don't let enough through to run it well. I tried using a 100watt equivalent (15watt actual) and mostly they would work but they would also get random flickers which was annoying and ugly. Since then I've cut out the internal motion stuff and made my own controls since there are 7 of these lights together now. Even with the original wiring using the red wire it would simply make all 7 lights flicker the same way. HOWEVER, this description says these are cast aluminum and they used to be but are now a cheaper pressed sheet metal. Updated descriptions don't say cast aluminum but say 'durable metal' to sort of hide it but the last 4 from Amazon or from big box stores are all going to the new version of pressed metal. Had to find old hardware stores to pick up the last 4 that I needed that were aluminum and were made more heavy duty. This Amazon description has not been updated yet.

Excellent motion detection light that works with LED lights!
I installed motion detection lights when I purchased my house in 1994 and they have failed so I needed to replace them with a reliable light that worked the same. I read the previous reports about how others have tried to use LED lights in this light where they didn't use a proper bulb. I have used a high quality dimmable LED bulbs where they work reliably in dimmable fixtures. I use the GE brand sold at Target and other various stores. The footprint of the light is large where I had to chisel a significant larger area on the rock facia where it was mounted on. Stripped the wires back about an inch to provide a solid connection with the wire nuts. I can't stress enough to purchase a high quality dimmable LED bulbs to use where the cheap ones can cause the failure of the circuitry and disable the functionality of the light. The standard settings for the motion detection is too sensitive where anyone who moves around 30 feet away triggers the sensor and illuminates all the lights for about 90 seconds. I really want it to trigger when movement is detected around 12 feet in a perimeter that I have set.

Great if you use a modified installation
After reading the reviews and examining the product, I realized that installing it using the supplied hardware wouldn't cut it. In order to fit the mounting bracket to my existing recessed single-gang electric box, I had to grind a small amount off the ends of the mounting bracket. For a flush-mount box, this won't be necessary. #6-32 screws are used to attach the mounting bracket to the wall box. I re-tapped the holes in the section of the mounting bracket for the long bolts, which attach to the body of the lantern, to #8-32 and replaced the original lantern mounting bolts with stainless steel #8-32 bolts. I used #8-32 brass knurled nuts to secure the lantern body to the bracket. The holes in the mounting bracket don't line up perfectly with the pass-throughs in the aluminum lantern body. This would make fitting the mounting bolts through the body very difficult while propped-up on a ladder. I carefully adjusted the bends in the mounting bracket to lengthen it until the holes lined-up. I drilled out the pass-through holes in the lantern body to accept the #8-32 bolts. Do not use LED or compact fluorescent bulbs. Using vintage-style incandescent bulbs, in the DualBrite mode, the lantern emits a beautiful glow and then switches to a bright light when triggered by movement in front of the lantern for the period of time you selected.
