How to rebuild impellers and never not buy one again!

If you are hearing a lot of rattling or rumbling noise from the filter, or it is just loud and the loud is not a water sound, its probably a worn out rod. What happens is the impeller spins millions of revolutions over time and wears out the stainless steel rod. You would notice that there is some play in between the hole of the impeller and the shaft. There should be no play. If you have a magnifying glass of a jewelers loop you would be able to see the rod getting thinner the closer it is to the impeller. You can replace that rod for a lot less than buying a new one. Here's what you need to do. 1. Get some needle nose plyers and pinch the rod just below the end cap, if the end cap is at 12:00, have the end of the plyers at 4:00, and then pivot the plyers up to 2:00 and this should push the cap off. 2. Remove the shaft, at this point there would be the other end cap on the other end of the shaft. 3. At this point you can do 1 of 2 things, get some Vaseline like others have said and cover the shaft in it and put it back together (this will get you by for maybe a few days) OR 3b. Go out and buy 2.5MM stainless steel rods on amazon, they come in 10 packs 300 mm long so you could make 30 of them if you needed to. ($9.99) 4. Use your old shaft to determine the right length and cut exactly to that length using cutters and a grinder or dermal tool to smooth it off. Just make sure the length is right. 5. Use Vaseline on the rod and put it back together with the end caps on the ends. You will have plenty of material left over for additional shafts. Takes about 20 minutes but I promise you will never have to spend $30 on a Marineland PRIM350B 350b Impeller again

Very pleased

I had another filter without carbon running but it didn't keep the water from getting cloudy. Within an hour of installing this unit the water had cleared up. I don't know how useful the "bio wheel " will be in the long run but I am very pleased with the results in the few hours I have had it.

Great choice!

Wonderful pump. The only issues I have are with the bio wheel. I noticed this issue is fixed when I spray off the filter, clean the slide area under the wheel going into the tank area and tube from the tank into the filter box. Basically anything that slows the water flow. I think the big one is keeping the slide clean so the water can flow quickly. Anytime there is an issue start with these 3 things. The filter works quickly and it won't take long for everything to settle.

Great HOB filter with bio wheels

Great HOB filter for any aquarium. The bio wheels are excellent for housing your beneficial bacteria. Works very well. Only issue is that you have to make sure the while caps only the wheel a pressed against the gray fins, or they will work themselves out and stop the wheel.

Not strong enough to even roll the bio-wheel.

Let me start by saying I have several of these on different tanks. One has been running for 2 years, one for 3 years, and one for almost 4 years. I bought another 200gph one in September 2022 because I set up a new 40 gallon and needed an extra HOB besides the sponge. This one was *okay* when I set it up, but it didn't feel as "strong" as the other ones. I feel like it was maybe pumping 100gph. And I don't mean overall strength, I mean sucking power compared in a ratio to two of the others (a 150 and a 350). The sucking power didn't even pull the water high enough to spin the bio-wheel, and as soon as there was even a fine layer of gunk on the filters, it went over the spillway. Okay, fine. I did a lot of messing with the spinning mechanism and even tried shortening the length of the arm, and nothing worked. I decided to let it go because it didn't do a *bad* job for what I needed it for. Personally, I think the ledge is higher than it is on the other two as well, so maybe that's part of the problem. May 2023, I finally got fed up with how pathetic the pumping had gotten. Instead of pumping 200 gph, it MAYBE pumped 20. I'm going to give it another shot, maybe this one was just a dud, but I'm wary.

Old 200 filter

This is the old version of the penguin 200. The new pro 275 is nicer with filter materials and a lot more expensive. It is a good filter and does the job. I like the Marineland filters the cartridge s are expensive so looking to upgrade mine. Lot of videos how to do. Recommend this filter at $25.

Works For Me

These filters have been around for a long time and I have 5 of these on various tanks ranging from 38 gallons to 75 gallons. They are easy to set up, easy to maintain and most importantly, they keep my tanks clean. The 350 has 4 slots (2 on each side) so each side takes a filter pad and a media container. You can put additional charcoal or zeolite ammonia remover in the media container. You will get 2 filter pads with the purchase of the filter but the media containers have to be purchased separately. The filter pads are less expensive than some other filter brands out there like the Aqueon brand, but I still like to hose them off a few times before actually throwing them out. Unlike some filters out there, the 350 has a cover to prevent splashing of the water outflow. The bio-wheel is suppose to maintain the biological beneficial bacteria that filters need. Other than the soft sound of water going into the tank, the filter is very quiet.

Terrific!

I had an inadequate filter for my blue crayfish tank. Within one day this filter turned the water crystal clear and it's still running strong. I've had this design before and it worked great as well. I've had a ton of different filters and this one is terrific! Marineland products are very well designed in general by the way.

Terrible noise from the filter

Clicking/vibration noise coming from the filter. Have tried resolving with the help of youtube but nothing works. Can only assume that i have faulty goods. Returning this item back to the US is not cost affective so my fault for purchasing in the first place.

Plug

This item came without a standard UK Plug, so I’m unable to use it with the 2 pronged plug it came with. Very disappointed, why not provide a Uk plug when they know it’s coming to the Uk.

Unreliable. Breaks every time.

The media could not be loaded. This is our second one in two years. First one lasted a year before stopping completely. This next one lasted a cpl months. Bio wheel just stops working. So unimpressed. UPDATE! Tried to give it one last try as it was on sale. Ordered it Dec 2. Installed that day. Stopped working today Dec 23. Unbelievable. See video.

DO NOT BUY THIS FILTER

GOT THIS MARINELAND PENGIN 200 SOME WEEKS AGO IT CAME FROM THE (USA) I HAVE JUST SET THIS FILTER UP FILLED IT WITH WATER PLUG IT IN AND IT WENT BANG STARTED TO SMOKE ONE DEAD FILTER IT DID NOT RUN FOR MORE THAN 20 SEC THING IS IF I HAD GONE OUT THIS FILTER WOULD HAVE SET MY HOUSE ON FIRE SO I AM A BIT PEED OFF WITH IT

The media could not be loaded. Works great.. soon as u dropped the filter in after letting bio wheel get started. There was a littel milkyness i didn't think would dissipate but this thing sucked it totally clear.. happy so far.. When drain is bleeding on the overspill gutter. Your filters are jammed meaning no flow rate to bio wheel to beat this rinse you filters in tankwater when you see overspill. This tem works amazing properly maintained. If ur combating alge like I was you will need to rinse filter more often. Cheers and enjoy! Love this thing I added charcoal bags in there as lots of room to jam mida in casing. Love this thing.. Rember if you loose power clean impeller casing and magnet to clear Alge. Absoulylty great unit. bio wheel works great.. ( properly maintaind) .. rinse filter in tank water more often if your running alot of bio mass. Update bio wheel finely slowing down. Means its working. Rotating alot slower with intermittent pauses.. means you did it rite. Love this thing Update month later going strong. Generate!
