MAVEA is a subsidiary of the world’s leading water filtration company that invented the category 45 years ago in Germany. Today, we serve millions of consumers worldwide, but water remains our only passion and business. MAVEA products were introduced to North America in 2009 to offer consumers premium water filtration experiences. FROM THE MANUFACTURER MAVEA Maxtra is the next generation in water filter technology; radically redesigned and re-shaped for greater performance. The new shape features performance advantages. The filter ingredients won’t get packed down at the bottom which can cause reduced filtration efficacy. Moreover, the MAVEA filter is designed to have maximum contact time with water to provide consistent performance over the life of the filter. No pre-soaking is required to activate the filter. The filter has a micro-screen which reduces black particle release in the pitcher. The filter is treated with silver to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Our filters are certified by the WQA (Water Quality Association) to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53. This means that they have passed standard tests to reduce chlorine taste and odor, heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and copper, agricultural chemicals and industrial pollutants. MAVEA has business partners who endorse the reliable performance of the MAVEA Maxtra filters. Select models of the Tassimo coffee brewing machine also uses the same MAVEA Maxtra filter to treat the water so the coffee looks and tastes its best. We recognize that our business is not about a product, but rather a natural resource. Americans send an estimated 38 billion water bottles to landfills each year. Each MAVEA Maxtra filter replaces approximately 300 bottles of water and could represent 300 fewer bottles in landfill. To take it one step further, MAVEA has developed an innovative and comprehensive end-to-end recycling program that reuses 100% of the MAVEA Maxtra filter materials. Filters can be sent to MAVEA in the mail, or placed in recycling bins in retail partner locations. Nothing ends up in a landfill. MAVEA Maxtra filters are also available in a convenient 1-pack.

Life of filter depends on the water it is filtering
Many people seemed to be concerned about the life expectancy of the filter. This filter really does respond to the water it is filtering. For the most part I am the sole user of my Mavea & having used it for awhile I've learned just about how much life each filter has, even by the .25% as shown on the display. Its just something you absorb. Anyway, I took my pitcher on an extended trip to the mountains & WOW! What a difference the water made. I did not need to use the spare, which I should have needed and still had mileage on my original filter to use once I was back in the city. Once back home the filter was quickly eaten up as per usual. On a second occasion I noticed that my filter was being eaten up. I was barely using it and the life was going, going, gone. I thought, like many perhaps it was the gauge until I realized that for the past several nights, thanks to my insomnia, that I was filling up my pitcher when the water plant must have been treating the water and was getting a particularly strong stream of chlorinated/chemically treated water. We've all had that, when you open the tap & smell the chlorine & most of us at one time or another have taken a sip of that water before our brains register the smell & bad taste. I am happy to say that once I paid attention & stopped filling the pitcher when the water appeared to be treated that my filter went back to the life expectancy that I am used to. These two incidents make me believe that the filter is doing its job and doing it well. I think treating the each unique water source is more valuable than an overall specified length of time or volume of water filtered. My suggestion is spend some time using your pitcher, get to know the average life expectancy of your filter & then IF it seems to be getting eaten up start questioning the efficacy of the gauge (might also want to see if something has changed in your water source as well). Just an FYI to all the people that are unaware of it... Mavea, as well as most brands of filters recommend that you do not filter more than 2 pitchers a day or within a certain amount of time between fill ups for maximum filtering. Also, the Mavea filter filters the water much faster than the different types of PUR filters that I have used (sorry, haven't had a Brita), but according to statistics given by both manufacturers Mavea filters out less things than the PUR triple action filter or whatever their strongest pitcher filter is. Hopefully Mavea will come up with an even better & stronger filter soon. That is the reason for only 4* otherwise Mavea rocks! Edit: I am not sure if this should go on the unit review or the filter review, so it will go on both. Since the initial purchase a few years ago I have had to replace the digital display. I contacted Mavea customer service, again they were prompt & courteous in their response. They kindly replaced the digital reader free of charge; however, since then I am questioning the accuracy & efficacy of the device. A few times the percentage had seemed to have went down even though no additional water had been filtered. Initially I thought that it may have just been on the cusp & changed, but then it did it again after just changing to a lower level & without additional water being filtered. Absolutely no reason for anything to change. Now I accidentally hit the reset button so it shows 100%, when in fact the filter was only at 25% by it's previous calculations prior to the accidental reset. I thought perhaps it would correct itself in time, but it has been a few weeks & the reader is behaving like I put in a new filter when it should not be. I previously defended the accuracy of the reader due to the vast difference I had when using various water sources, but now am left wondering if they have changed something in the reader. Perhaps there is a difference between the older readers & newer ones??? Overall I still like the Mavea system, especially the look of the pitcher, but since they have not added an upgraded filter that filters out more contaminants & now this new sketchy reader I may be looking for a different filtering system when the time comes or I am so moved.

Obsolete System, Filter Subscription = Wasted Dollars
I have used my Mavea pitcher heavily for several years (for myself, in my one-person home, where I replace the filters according to my limited useage). I've had a continual subscription for replacements filters, which means I now have several boxes of filters sitting on my shelf waiting to be used. The pitcher has now completely broken down- the litle flip-top lid cracked off a couple of years ago, and the cover itself is so worn that it no longer stays in place - I have to hold it tightly onto the body of the pitcher every time I try to pour, or the pressure of the water inside will press the cover off, dumping water all over everything. There are apparently no replacement pitchers available from Mavea for this rig, and, from what I can determine, these filters are not compatible with any other pitcher. Therefore I have wasted my money on filters I'll will never be able to use. Why is Amazon continuing to sell subscriptions for filters for an obsolete system that inevitably (from what I'm reading in the Q&As) falls apart and becomes unusable?

Does what it says
I tried to go without a new filter for too long and it turns out they need to be replaced as recommended.

Filter replacement varies by usage
Some reviewers are complaining about the timer not working properly. If you read the description for the pitcher you'll have an answer to your question. I didn't and ended up contacting Mavea who explained why the timer on my pitcher ticked down to 0% after only 3 weeks of use. The timer is not simply a clock like you get with the Brita filter. Theirs is a dummy clock that ticks down 2 months regardless of how often you fill it. Mavea claims their timer is more sophisticated than that. It also factors in the hardness of the water and the amount of water you put into the pitcher. My city water is hard (14) and we refill the pitcher quite a bit...even though there's only 2 of us plus a dog in this household. I'm home all day and I drink a lot of water. The dog gets filtered water too in his bowl. :) So that explains why the timer is not giving all of us the same information. I'd rather know my filter is nearing its usefulness than to not know and keep drinking water from it. The extra filter keeps those nasty charcoal bits out of my water. I was constantly emptying the Brita pitcher to remove charcoal that had sunk to the bottom of the pitcher. Brita says that's Ok, you can drink the charcoal. No thank you, I'd rather my water pitcher not look like someone has been panning for gold. The company that makes this Mavea pitcher used to own Brita. After they sold it to Clorox they proceeded to design a better product which turned out to be this water filtration pitcher. Another improvement was to make it out of BPA-free plastic. Even though I'll have to buy more filters (3-packs) I'm still happy I switched to this brand.

Just right
Just what I wanted. Fits my Mavea water filter pitcher perfectly. Good price on Amazon.. They no longer make this pitcher so I hope it will last me for a while, as long as I can find these filters.
