The Nicholson half-round hand file has one flat side with double-cut American pattern teeth and one curved side with single-cut American pattern teeth for use on flat and curved surfaces. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on the flat side for rapid material removal and single-cut teeth on the round side for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately). Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files. Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Great file for deburring
I like to keep the 4" half round file handy to deburr metal parts that I have cut or machined. The 4" length file is just right for small parts or smaller features that are not quite the easiest to deburr with a deburring tool or scraper. It works well, but the newer files are not quite as nicely produced as the older US files. I received a made in Brazil file and it works well, but the fit and finish is a bit rough. The tang is a bit off center, there are a few out of place cut marks from when they made the file teeth, etc. That said, it works just fine, and so far it is holding up just fine, it hasn't dulled noticeable faster.

Best files for the money
Best files for the price. I like Nicholson files and use them widely in my sharpening and welding practice.

Nicholson Half-Round hand file, Double cut American pattern, Bastard cut 16"
Great file! I bought this for my use in a pipe welding class to prep 12" pipe. After cutting the ends of the pipe to 37 1/2 degree's I needed this file to file the ends of the bevel to a 3/32. This file really takes off the metal fast compared to the single cut files that the college was supplying. The double cut file saves me alot of prep time so I can spend more time welding pipe. 16" makes it great when I am working with 12" diameter pipe.

As advertised and works well
Excellent file, although larger than I pictured it when buying. It has held up well to cleaning up the faces of anvils and hammers so far without any durability issues.

Good for woodwork
it's a file that is almost a rasp. I guess that's what I'd call it. Good for woodwork, do some shaping with this and then clean up with something finer. It removes wood evenly and doesn't seem to get clogged up.

What a great file!
So impressed that I just had to let people know what a great little file this is! Bought it some time ago but didn't really give it any serious use until working on a project the other day and wow, does it ever do a great job. Nicely balanced and files evenly. Not sure what I paid for it, but I see it's on for $20 now, which seems a little pricey for a small file, but it is worth every penny! Highly recommend!
