PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Norton 4-1/2-ounce sharpening stone oil is formulated for oilstone lubrication, with the correct viscosity for smooth sharpening without loading or clogging stones; it flushes away dislodged abrasive and metal chips to prevent metal from bonding with the surface of an oilstone, and meets U.S. Pharmacopeia standards for mineral oil purity. Norton sharpening stone oil is a highly refined lubricant that is effective for many other lubricating uses. This 4-1/2-oz. can of sharpening stone oil, measuring 5 x 2 x 1 inch (H x W x D), has a snug-fitting lid, stores compactly, and fits into Norton portable sharpening systems for mobile use. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) This oil meets U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) standards for mineral oil purity. Sharpening stones, or whetstones, are abrasive surfaces used to sharpen and hone the edges of steel cutting implements, such as chisels, knives, scissors, hand scrapers, and plane blades. Sharpening is the process of creating or re-establishing a cutting edge by grinding away portions of the metal to adjust the angle of the edge and reform the shape. Honing removes small imperfections. Stones can be flat, for working flat edges, or shaped, for edges that are more complex. When used with lubricating liquid, a sharpening stone can be called a waterstone or an oilstone, based on the lubricant required. Oilstones use sharpening stone oil for lubrication when sharpening, to prevent metal from bonding with the abrasive surface by flushing away dislodged abrasive and metal chips. Norton Abrasives manufactures sanding, grinding, and polishing abrasives, and has been located in the United States since 1885. Norton, now a brand of Saint-Gobain, meets ISO 9000 and 14001 certification for quality and environmental management standards. FROM THE MANUFACTURER To make your sharpening job easier, try Norton Sharpening Stone Oil. Specially formulated for all types of metal. Norton sharpening stone oil is a natural, highly refined light mineral oil. It is a pharmacopia grade oil so it is safe for use on kitchen tools. Mineral oil lubrication is recommended for all Norton oil stones. Oil acts as an effective lubricant during the sharpening process to float away metal and abrasive dust that would otherwise clog up the stone and ultimately render it useless.

Great for sharpening knives.

Great for fine oil stones!
This stuff goes a long ways on fine stones. The Norton sharpening oil is a great lubricant for folding knives! For coarse stones I use the thicker laxative mineral oil found at drug stores as the coarse stones seem to really drink up the finer mineral oil.

About fix and a half inches long
I bought this to carry in my Dopp kit with my razor. It's a larger can than I had expected, and will last me a very long time.

Your oilstone will thank you for this.
Norton oil is the only oil I use on my oilstones and for a good reason. Norton makes oilstones, seems to me they would know what the best type of oil blend to use on them is. It doesn't get sticky like when you tried to use cooking oil that one time, it lets the metal shavings release from the stone and make a great slurry for honing.

It's working for me!
I am a extreme amateur in knife sharpening, but with all the cheap little pocket knives I have laying around the house, why not try to build a skill? Starting out, I bought a standard whetstone from a local tool store, and used water when I learned I needed something to lubricate and clean the blade as I sharpened it. Well, I was able to restore damaged edges using only water on the whetstone, but the edges I got weren't really sharp, they were just edges. Using this, I was able to immediately sharpen the edges of the knives I'm practicing on. Mind, I still can't get a knife to a razor sharp state, but the fact that this oil helped a novice like myself that much says a lot in my book. Is there better stuff than this and my tool store cheap whetstone? I'm sure there is. But hey, for the price, this is working just fine for me!
