I've been cooking rice the old fashioned way for way too long!
I love my rice cooker! It is so convenient, and the rice never burns! This rice cooker is magical. I don't know how it is done, but it turns off when my brown rice is cooked. It doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. This is so much easier than doing it on the stove! I wish I'd gotten a rice cooker years ago.

Easy peasy!
Makes perfect jasmine rice in about 20 minutes. Easy cleanup, too, with the nonstick surface. No more boiling rice on the stove. We love it!

Cute and functional
Bought this for my college student, who was about to pack up my own rice maker and take it to school. Figuring most of these low-end models were about the same, I chose this one simply for the festive color and didn’t have very high expectations for performance. After having used it myself many times, I found this Oster as good or better than the different brands I have owned at this price point, so I gave my student the old one and kept this for myself! The first time I cooked rice with this, I mistakenly forgot all about it and it stayed on “warm” mode for probably an hour or more—to my surprise, the rice was not burned to the bottom as usual with these cheap cookers. That batch was white rice with broth, not sure if that mattered. I have also made both yellow rice and brown rice and those didn’t burn either (but I took the rice out pretty promptly once cooked). I do find that the rice is a little to “al dente” for my taste, but I've been experimenting with broth levels to see if I can get it to my preference. I have only used the steamer basket as a holding area to keep food warmed above the rice, and it works well for that when I'm not quite ready to sit down to dinner. As expected, the cooking pan cleans up easily as long as you don't scratch it—so use the provided plastic spoon to scoop rice, always!). The handle loop on the lid is wider than the one on my old cooker, so it's easier to handle. I normally make either 2 or 3 measures of rice (using the included plastic cup, not a real measuring cup) and it's fine for that; probably too small for more than a few people or for massive meal prepping.

Still needs to be monitored
Works great when steaming veggies, but rice cookers (excepting some complicated models) basically suck. I see so many people posting how they couldn't live w/o them, but they mostly suck. That said, this will cook rice with supervision. Granted, it doesn't spew as much starch laden steam all over the counters, but it still needs to be watched. (This is after having rinsed your rice multiple times.) After about 5 minutes you'll see bubbles rising up, so you must open the lid 2 or 3 times to drop the bubbles down, to avoid it spewing out the top. Again watch when the water boils down. The rice is usually cooked proper before water is 100% gone, it shuts down, and goes into "keep warm". If you wait that long you have dry rice, and sticking to the bottom. If you time it well, you have excellent rice. All in all, better than some, about 90% of preparing with constant supervision. I'm waiting for a ricer that won't mess up my kitchen and not require a constant watch... w/o requiring I scrub an 8 quart pressure cooker for 1/2 cup of rice.

Bought another...
I bought this same rice cooker a few years back and lost it...maybe lent it out, can't remember. I used it all of the time. Tried a fully enclosed rice cooker but it took longer to cook the rice and harder to clean the lid. This isn't an actual US measure 6 cups cooked rice....it means 6 'rice cooker cups' which are 3/4 cup per US measure. So, you will actually get 3/4 cup x 6 equals 4.5 US cups of cooked rice, max. All rice cookers are measured this way. I put 1 rice cup measure of rinsed rice on the bottom, put the water to the 1 line. Add thick, sliced cabbage on top. After it starts steaming, then add the steamer tray with broccoli and carrot.. In about 20 minutes we have perfect side dishes for 2. True, it's not a lot of rice per person but I am pre-diabetic so I don't need more than 1/3 cup cooked rice for my own meal. Not only carbs are being watched but serving size as well. Add some protein and you have a nice meal. Any veggie combo works; I happen to love cooked cabbage. Remember to fluff your rice, it makes the portion look bigger...or you can put the rice in a measuring cup and invert onto the plate to create height. Also, my other trick is to serve the rice on top of the cooked cabbage, makes it look like more. For those who have spattering rice starch water....pre-rinse your rice first. Rinse until the water runs clear. Also, I put a kitchen towel lightly around the lid's rim to help catch any stray spatters, don't usually have spatters cooked my way with little rice and lots of veggies. When I did cook a pot full of rice, I did have a lot more spatters. As others have said, add some fat to your rice or pre-fry the rice...gives it a nutty taste. You can cook other things in this as well: heat up canned soup, or fill the pot with vegetables and a bit of water on the bottom to steam a potful. Also, the biggest PLUS for this rice cooker, vs others, is that it has a ring around the bottom (instead of 3 feet) which keeps it solid on the counter. The ones with 3 feet tip and can fall over. Best added feature from my previous Oster 3 cup rice cooker! ***May 9, 2016 - I have had it with this rice cooker. It's making the white rice hard and crusty on the bottom and mushy on top. I just ordered a Tiger cooker and hope it makes much nicer textured rice...I am switching to brown rice.

Works well.
The steamer basket is not as nice as others I've had, but otherwise is good.
