The Pitsco Balsa Wood Basic Mousetrap Vehicle kit provides students in grades 6-12 a hands-on activity to design and build a model car that demonstrates scientific concepts including velocity, force, motion, and Newton's laws of physics, and it teaches engineering design. Students can build the car from the kit and can modify the car for improved performance and greater speed. The kit includes a mousetrap, 12- and 18-inch long balsa wood pieces, standard-sized compact discs for wheels, wheel spacers, thrust washers, 12-inch brass tubing pieces, ultra-thin string, and instructions. Pitsco kits 57034 (pack of 10 kits) and 57035 (pack of 30 kits) also include a copy of the handbook, Doc Fizzix's Mousetrap Powered Cars and Boats. The finished vehicle measures approximately 4.5 x 5 x 26.5 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) A mousetrap vehicle kit is typically used in an educational setting to demonstrate engineering and physics. Construction requires white glue, ruler, hobby knife, wire cutter, and a drill or Dremel tool (all sold separately). Science education products incorporate applied math and science principles into classroom projects. Teachers in pre-K, elementary, and secondary classrooms use science education kits and products alongside science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to demonstrate STEM concepts and real-world applications through hands-on activities. Science education projects include a broad range of activities, such as practical experiments in engineering, aeronautics, robotics, energy, chemistry, physics, biology, and geology. Pitsco Education develops K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum, educational kits, and classroom tools. The company, founded in 1971, is headquartered in Pittsburg, KS. What’s in the Box? * Pitsco Balsa Wood Basic Mousetrap Vehicle Kit * Mousetraps (one per car) * Balsa wood pieces (3 per car) * Compact discs (4 per car) * Wheel spacers (4 per car) * Washers (4 per car) * Brass tubing (2 lengths per car) * Ultra-thin string (1 length per car) * A handbook, Doc Fizzix's Mousetrap Powered Cars and Boats (10 pack and 30 pack only) * Instructions Note: The wheels pictured are not typical but are an example of the how students can paint and decorate their vehicles.

Finished vehicle measures approximately 4.5 x 5 x 26.5 inches (H x W x D). Reinforces technology, engineering, and math concepts as students modify cars based on factors that impact performance. Exposes students to the design process and encourages them to experiment and modify the vehicle for greater speed or distance. Includes parts required to build a vehicle propelled by a mousetrap for teaching engineering design. Wood mousetrap vehicle kit provides students in grades 6-12 a hands-on activity to design, build, and modify a model car that demonstrates the scientific concepts of velocity, force, motion, and Newton's laws of physics.

Not the wheels in the image
Clear, flimsy wheels came in this kit. I specifically bought this because I thought the wheels were stronger and looked cool. I was extremely disappointed. The kit is way overpriced for what's with it. The car came together ok with some upgraded wheels.

This kit works, but you can make it much better with some intelligent improvements.
The directions are great and this is a perfect kit to MODIFY for a racer. Skip using the board you see below the mousetrap as one big board. Instead, glue the mousetrap straight to the two side boards (so the car is as wide as the mousetrap) after you cut off a couple more, mousetrap width pieces, from the big board. Use those additional pieces to stiffen up the frame. Use a pipe cutter to trim the axles and get some nylon washers from the hardware store to fit the axles (I used #10 sized.) The nylon washers help you keep the axles straight. If you really have time, you can drill out a bunch of holes to save weight. I also had some wider CD sized wheels that came from the packaging of 100 packs of DVD's, and those wheels easily accepted a wider rubber band to help provide traction to the drive tires. Also, consider a single front wheel over two, if you can manipulate it.

Science Olympiad parent approved
Bought this for Science Olympiad from seeing other parents using this the year prior. Our child signed up for Mousetrap Vehicle AGAIN! We were not thrilled. Year prior we spent countless hours, days, weeks making the perfect mousetrap vehicle. We built around 3 and our kid’s friends parents build 4 or 5. You could imagine the stress this brought to our family. Well when our kids came home and was so happy about signing up for this endeavor again, we were shocked she didn’t remember the pain and anguish from the last year. I quickly bought this and it was PAINLESS and RELAXING. This is easy and fun, the way it should have been the first time. Instructions are kid friendly. Our 10 years did most of the work. Super convenient!

Fun kit to build!
My daughter had this as a school project so we built it and it worked great, it was a science project about force! She painted it too, great fun!

It worked. Price is a little high for what it is.
I ordered this on two day shipping, and it came on time for a school project. It was missing one of the plastic CDs, so I just used a junk one that I have. The brand for this product is wrong, this is actually a mousetrap car from DocFizzix.com from years ago, I'd assume that they are just re-branding them and selling off left over stock. As for the quality, its okay. The CDs are flimsy and I recommend using real disks for ease of build. Also I found out that it's actually cheaper to buy this off of their store, for like 15 dollars. After I finally managed to throw it together, it performed okay. This thing works best when you have it on longer and flatter surfaces, unlike my test trials (ie. a shorter hallway and on carpet). So, with all of this considered, I give this a 3/5. Is it worth 20 dollars? No, more like 15, or even 10. I also included some images of the build and the package it came in, some of the images may be poor quality so I apologize.

Good enough for 3rd place out of 25.
My daughter ended up with an 87’ run using this kit for a physics class project. Much simpler than trying to do it from scratch. The resulting car is great for a school project. By design it’s not made to be crashed into a fleet of toy trucks by an 8 year old. It did its job at our home and is destined for the trash can during a cleaning project a year from now ;).

A very worthwhile purchase for the curious minded.
The kit was very well made, and I loved the fact that the holes were predrilled. The instructions would be more helpful if it were a little more in dept, as the last steps were very confusing for me. If you by any chance use this kit for Science Olympiad, then you might face problems with the vehicle not fitting into the even parameters, but this issue could be easily fixed with some modifications. All in all, this was an excellent mousetrap vehicle.

Sucks.
Wheels don’t stay on. Mousetrap spring broke off. Frame has no support. What a disappointment!
