When creating any multi-tiered cake it is essential to consider the engineering as well as the presentation. Although not usually visible most cakes will require additional support e.g. dowel rods, hidden or hollow pillars to obtain the effect required. Cakes stacked without support will most likely sag or collapse. Cake pillars and dowel rods should be positioned evenly and it is advisable to prepare a pattern to ensure the correct layout. The number required may vary according to the cake shape and size. These White Hollow Pillars come in a pack of 4. Measuring 317 mm (12.5 inches) they are perfect for putting in between pillared cakes or used to support stacked cakes. They can be cut down to size easily and the diameter of the top fits support plates perfectly.

Would use again!

Used for a 3 tier wedding cake. Felt very sturdy once put together. They were bigger than I expected them to be and were hard work to cut through but worked well. Would use again.

Sturdy and did the trick but difficult to cut

Held two tier cake together well but I found them challenging to cut with any of my kitchen knives. A work bench and a hacksaw would probably have been more effective! They also took up a fair bit of space of the 10inch cake I made once there were 5 in. Next time I will use one in the centre and three, not four, to support the second tier.

Excellent

I bought these dowels as I was making a rather tall, 3-D character cake and wanted to use something that would definitely take the weight of all the cake tiers. These hollow dowels definitely fit the bill. They were easy to cut--I marked with a pencil and used a bread knife to saw through them--and the finished cake was very sturdy. I would definitely use them again!
