Carriage bolts feature a slightly rounded head and have no exposed sharp edges when fully fastened. Due to that reason, they are often used when a more aesthetic look is desired. They are commonly used on docks and on playground equipment or in cases where it may be difficult to reach the bolt head with a tool. The square shoulder on carriage bolts help to hold it in place while the nut is fastened.

Good for nothing. Freak thread size. Not 3/8 - 16. Garbage
I installed these in a boat trailer bunk and covered them with carpet. When I went to put the nuts on, they wouldn't fit. I took these bolts to hardware store and they dont match any nut. I tried 3/8 fine and course, metric, and nothing worked. I had to remove carpet and remove and replace bolts with bolts from hardware store. 2 hours wasted. These bolts are useless unless you live in China and have nuts for the freak thread size.

Exactly the right size.
Used for replacing wheelbarrow handles.

Poor quality control
9 out of 25 bolts required re-tapping so you could put a nut on them. Numerous chips in the galvanizing down to the base metal, so no corrosion protection there.
