Carriage bolts feature a slightly rounded head and have no exposed sharp edges when fully fastened. Due to that reason, they are often used when a more aesthetic look is desired. They are commonly used on docks and on playground equipment or in cases where it may be difficult to reach the bolt head with a tool. The square shoulder on carriage bolts help to hold it in place while the nut is fastened.

Bad Threads
9 of 25 of the bolts were not usable. The nut would start but would not go past a few threads. I even tried putting the bolts in a vice in hope of cleaning up the threads with no luck. The worst part was I was using these to hold down the plywood on the floor of a trailer with anti-turn washers. It tore up the plywood when the nut got stuck on the defective bolt. Test each bolt with a nut before you waste your time dealing with nut stuck on a bad bolt. Buyer Beware!!
