Very good, very cold and provides good coverage all around the knee
This ice wrap has been great to help me recover from a traumatic injury to my knee. I was hesitant to buy it based on some of the negative reviews, so I thought I would address those for others who might be on the fence: 1) A few reviewers said it is too cold. I suspect this has a lot to do with individual freezer temps, but mine do get very, very cold. I use this ice wrap over my leggings, and it still is quite cold. I'm used to putting a ziploc back of crushed ice directly on my skin, and this wrap is noticeably colder than that. I do think that depending on freezer temp, this definitely has potential to cause frostbite if the user is not careful. 2) Gel packs falling out or shifting - When the gel packs are warm (room temp), they are quite soft, so i can see how they would shift. Once frozen, though, they keep their shape. The pockets have flaps on both sides, so I have not had any trouble with them falling out. 3) Gel pack being too hard - In my freezer, the gel packs do develop ice crystals in them and get pretty firm. However, they are still pliable, so I'm able to massage them with my hand to get the gel evenly distributed and to shape them as necessary. 4) It is too heavy to move around in - I agree. I have the L/XL size with 4 gel packs, and though I have walked across the room with this on, it's not something I would generally do. I like putting my legs up while icing anyway, so this isn't a problem for me. One issue I have is that they develop frost on them quickly. I live in a fairly humid climate, and I'm sure any similar product would have the same issue if it were equally cold. The reason this is a problem is that if there is frost on the inside of the wrap, it gets extra cold in that spot, which is uncomfortable and potentially harmful. I solve this by keeping the inside surfaces of the wrap together (not exposed to much air), so when frost develops, it develops on the outside of the wrap. I give this 4 stars because it works well for me. It gives good 360 coverage around my knee, and I like that it is cold. I'd prefer to add an extra layer between my skin and the ice pack than to have one that is too warm even when directly on my skin.

Overkill but Acceptable
Here is a product that is a bit over-the-top in terms of its overall raison d'etre. I say this because the 4 Velcro straps are a pain in the neck to get set up; yet, once set up, your knee enters the Ice Age. Which, of course, is why I purchased the contraption. Is it worth the money? Cause it's not inexpensive considering it's basically ice packs in sleeves. Yes, I do think it is worth the $48 I paid for it. Why. Because once I have it on my knee it results in well-distributed cold for my joint. No re-adjusting, no leaning on it to maintain coldness, the ice packs within the sleeves are well-designed to maintain position & apply cold. I've had several knee surgeries due to pro sports career. Older now & the missing cartilage results in joint pain, wearing down of the bone, arthritis - - you know the deal. Until someone invents cartilage replacement this product does help mitigate knee pain from daily use. My user stats: 6'2, 210, 55 yrs old, former pro athlete, current sports are road cycling, surfing, long walks.

good product, but...
I did want to give this product a negative review because it is a good product and performs the way it's supposed to. It compresses your knee and keeps it very cold, and really that is all you want. For my needs I found it wanting. My issues with it are small and I hope the reader can make a more informed decision than I did. I purchased this wrap along with another competing one. In comparing it with the other wrap is where it falls short. The problems I encountered with it may not be problems to someone else, but for me they were. The biggest issue is that the gel packs are not, and I hope I'm phrasing it right, sewn in or stationary. Unless you fold the wrap properly and put it neatly in the freezer, the rectangular gel packs are going to move around (instead of vertical, you will find them horizontal, or may even be falling out). When removed from the freezer you may need to readjust them. The second issue is that the gel inside each pack also moves about. If not careful you will find that some areas of the rectangular gel packs are thicker than others. That means you will need to flatten the packs either before or after in order to get an even cold distribution when you put it on. To me this felt like extra work and unnecessary because competitive designs did not have those issues. Being in pain the only thing I wanted to do, when I reached inside the freezer for the wrap, was simply put it on. I also purchased the 'knee ice pack by A to P total knee wrap' . For my needs, I had total knee replacement surgery, the latter wrap became a better choice because it enabled me to cover a larger area. Shortly after the operation, it felt like most of my leg was swollen and really sensitive. The latter wrap, in addition to the larger coverage, also felt lighter, less heavy, less tighter. Again, I will say that I liked the Shock Doctor Compression Wrap and still use it, but it just was not as good a fit. I think this wrap would be a better fit for knee injuries that are more localized. It's a quality product, but for someone with total knee replacement it is probably better to look elsewhere. It would work great for someone that just wants to ice their knee after a good workout.

effective, well designed
I had a total knee replacement and my medical team said I should ice the knee fairly frequently. Regular ice bags, etc., were a PITA so I went looking for highly rated solutions. This item came up as one of the top ones, and I snagged it. I have not regretted it - the points that helped put it in the top rated units were that it put a gel pack right across the front of the knee and also one *behind* the knee. (That's as well as the usual two that fit one on each side of the knee so four packs total.) In addition, the gel used in their packs did NOT freeze solid; it remained flexible enough to allow it to shape to my knee. You can pull this stretchy unit to fit *and* the 'velcro-on-steroids' straps hold very well. In my case, this is a double bargain as I will be having the other knee done in about 1.5 months.

Great product for knee recovery
I've been using this product for several months now to treat my knee, which suffers minor osteoarthritis following surgery a few years ago and swells up if I do anything to intense, like play tennis (which I do each week). I've tried using other knee icing packs but after some research I bought the Shock Doctor and I have to say that it really does the best job of wrapping around and cooling the entire knee area - front and back, above and below. Good sized cooling elements mean that it really retains its low temperature, allowing you to return it to the freezer after 10-15 minutes to then re-apply again an hour later, although if you were buying them for recovery from knee surgery (ie, you want to apply them regularly over a 16 hour day, I'd recommend buying 2, or maybe even three, and rotate their use, as once they do gain temperature they will take a long time to lose it again). Easy to apply with 4 velcro tabs to really pull the cooling packs firmly onto the knee. Fabric is the right thickness and its comfortable to wear, with the cold packs sitting in place in their pockets and providing a great wrap around cooling effect.. Cold packs don't leak and are easily removable but I tend to leave them in their pockets and stick the whole thing in the freezer (at about -15C). Well worth the money.
