Well Made
This gate is well made and sturdy. We got it for my mother's cat who liked to visit my husband and me late at night or early in the morning to pound on our door and wake us up. Know he can't get past my mother's area of the house and we are so thrilled.

Solid, works as intended.
The gate is solid. I'm using it in a 30" doorway between the kitchen and dining /living area to keep an 18 month old out of the kitchen and to keep him separated from the dog when he gets pesky. The gate does not come "bent" as some reviewers have noted, in fact there was a sheet of paper saying it isn't bent in the box. Since there can be no solid bar across the top the posts are farther apart at the top, so that when the adjustments are made to vertical there will be solid pressure against the door jambs, like compressing a spring. Assembly is not difficult but the adjustments are somewhat critical to proper operation. It should be squared up nicely and the gap at the latch has to be right. The gate swings both ways, stay open when fully opened and self-closes on anything less or with a gentle shove. The double action of pulling the catch back and lifting the whole gate, maybe an inch, takes a bit of getting used to but it will thwart the efforts of a toddler to figure it out. I did not need either of the two extensions provided for my small doorway. The gate will keep your baby safe but it may take more than a few adjustments to get so that it operates properly. If that isn't done you may find the latch won't engage. Any DIYer with modest skills will get it but some of the reviews and pictures accompanying some reviews show that there are klutzy people out there for whom this thing will be a contraption. Oh, and it will stand up to a big dog or kid throwing his weight on or against it.

It is what is expected
The gate itself is very simple to put together, but because it is simple it also its not overly sturdy. The extension sides are only held into place by small metal rods that do not click in and lock. Therefore the extensions themselves do not stay locked in, and moving the gate at all could cause them to literally fall off. The rubber tension stop that hold the gate in place are similarly just slid into the holes and do not lock in place. Other than that the gate works as expected. Very easy to put together and use. You will notice at first it looks as if the gate door itself is too short to reach the lock, but thats only because there is no tension pushing it into place. The tension from the gate pushing against each wall will actually bring the gate door to the lock place, which adds a great deal to it's sturdiness.

Love these gates!
I have purchased 6 gates from North States over the years. They are sturdy, easy to install, and easy to use. My original 3 gates are almost 9 years old. Just bought 3 more, but shorter, as my older cats can't jump over the high ones anymore. Definitely worth the money!

High Quality Gate
This Gate is a high quality item. It is also attractive and easy to use. We use it to keep our dog from going into the bedrooms, and have it across a 36" hallway. So far there have been no problems, and we are very pleased with the quality and operation.

Not bad, but better gates out there
This safety gate does the job, however, in terms of the overall quality and weight of materials, and the opening/closing system, there are better gates out there for the price.

New Doggie-Gate Review
I purchased this gate to keep my Doberman Pinscher female segregated from her sister to minimize fighting during feeding times. It arrived well-packaged with all parts needed, as-advertised. It is a sturdy gate of decent medium-duty quality. My only complaint is the latch that holds the gate closed on top has a pin that fits in a sliding cover, and the pin is not quite sturdy enough for my liking. Mainly though, the pin is short and does not match up to the latch mechanism unless you expand the gate's threaded adjustment rods as tight as you can get them, which pushes the tops of the gate supports closer to each other. Even after doing that, I would prefer a heavier-duty latch, but then I am concerned about the force of an 80 pound Doberman striking the gate. In toddler use or for smaller dogs, the pin and latch would not be an issue. The gate opens fully to either side and has a stay-open feature that works well. So far, the gate has worked well and has a decent appearance.
