The best avocado slicer for you
The best avocado slicer for you! I first saw an avocado slicer at my family Christmas and knew I had to order one. I make guacamole about once a week and have been acknowledged at many parties that the guacamole I make is some of the best around. I learned this special recipe while working in Texas, in a town with strong Mexican heritage. This product has allowed me to make guacamole faster and taste better. In making guacamole, the struggle is always being able to scoop the entire avocado off the skin. If you make guacamole often, the AMCO avocado slicer and pitter is a must. The design allows the user to completely separate the avocado from the skin in one quick movement. It takes some time to perfect the technique, but once you do, it is a breeze to process avocados. For example, in a big batch of guacamole, I would normally have to purchase 10 avocados. With this product I can make the same amount with only 9. Not only is it quick and easy, but it also saves money by retrieving more of the avocado from the skin. The other great benefit that this product offers is that it will easily slice the avocado into narrow strips. These strips make it much easier to mash the avocado into guacamole. By not having to mash as much, the guacamole’s taste and texture will be perfect. On occasion (1 in every 10 avocados) the slices are not as neat as they could be. This will not matter in making guacamole, but if you were using it to make slices on a salad, it may not look as orderly. Nonetheless, the worst slices from the AMCO avocado slicer are still better than any slice cut with just a knife. Another great feature of this product is the pitter on the other end. This tool is able to scoop out that pesky pit in a mater of seconds. Some people might use a knife to dig it out, but that adds a risk of hurting yourself. With the pitter, the danger is eliminated and is safe for people to use. The pitter does add some length to the overall tool and makes it somewhat bulky, but it’s a feature worth having. On top of everything, once you have finished making the perfect batch of guacamole, simply put the AMCO slicer and pitter in the dishwasher. It is designed so that no food particles get stuck and comes out clean every time. It does cost a little more than other products but it is built to last. It is well worth your money to get a quality product that will allow you to slice avocados one after another for years. If you want a kitchen tool that will improve your guacamole making skills, this is the product for you. Have fun making the perfect guacamole!

great for avocado AND eggs also
we eat a lot of avocados in our house. For our workouts, it is a good supplement to some GOOD fat as well as healthy for our hearts when eaten in moderation. Peeling and slicing avocado, however, has always been a pain in our butts as we always have problems smushing at least some(sometimes all, when too ripe) of the avocados. A good avocado is delicate and soft, but unless we want guacamole each time, a mashed avocado isn't that appealing on top of crisp Romaine lettuce and tomatoes. Along comes this slicer that makes slicing the avocado easier. With a nice ripe avocado, this slicer can go through it with ease. It does leave a little bit behind(but not as much as when we scoop it out with spoons and try to slice it). With some practice, we can almost scoop the HAAS clean right against the skin leaving very little waste. Avocados are not cheap products so every little bit helps save money. ~~~~~~~~~~ how to use it: one would still have to use a knife to slice the avocado in half. Then use the corer from the slicer to take out the pit. placing the slicer along the wide end and scraping in one smooth motion without stopping seems to create the best results. not all of the slices come off the first half. So we just keep at it untill all the halves have been sliced as each of the new halves that get sliced help get the residues from the last halves out. with the very last half, we push it out gently using our palms. It is also a great egg salad slicer. Pushing a boiled egg through it on the wide end, then turn the egg around and run it through again to create small cubes. Simple and fast! ~~~~~~~~~~ I can see why some people would deem this just another gadget in the kitchen, and it can become one if you only eat avocados ever so often. And if when you do, you make guacamole, this slicer is not for you. But if you are looking to eat healthier and like avocados on your salads, as slices on top of some triscuits(delicious! and make great horse do overs[hors d'oeuvres] for parties!), just by themselves, this slicer is a great aid.

Not worth owning
I'm a bit surprised by the good reviews. Admittedly this is the first and only avocado pitter I've ever owned. I was looking forward to using it. I eat probably around 5+ avocados a week. I was doing the 'ol use the chef's knife to remove the pit trick. But lately, I had been cutting my hand doing it. Mostly from the knife flipping off the pit as I tried to get the knife's blade into the pit. When I finally got it, I tried to use it for about a week. What I found was that it did not concisely remove the pit well (left a bunch of avocado on the pit, typically depending upon how ripe the pit was). And removing the skin typically resulted in a lot of the vibrant green layer being left behind. The slicer, while working well, was a pain in the A to clean (hey, I'm guy ... we're lazy). In the end, I just changed my pitting style. Best method I found was to do the half slice. Then, for the half with the pit, cut that in half (which would result in 2 quarter pieces). It is pretty easy to then remove the pit. The avocado does have to be ripe, but it doesn't need to be overly ripe for this to work. The only downside is occasionally the skin is difficult to remove. But since I need a knife anyways to cut it open, I figure why waste energy on using and cleaning a tool which doesn't necessarily work consistently well.
