A decent helmet for the money.
The Vision series helmet with the X54V Auto Dimming lens comes with a 2 sensor 7.25 sq inch view screen which responds quickly to input. You are able to adjust the shade from 9 to 13 in even increments. Sensitivity is adjustable over a wide range with the lowest setting being grind mode. Delay coming off auto dark is adjustable from .5 seconds to 3.5 seconds in half second increments. I suspect not to many people will be using the longer delay settings. The model I purchased, X54V-1555 Tank, has a nice matt finish to it that feels slightly waxy to the touch. I suspect the coating is a to protect the finish from arc splatter. The helmet is very light and relatively sturdy for the weight. Fairly narrow as well. Contrary to the 2017 and 2018 ArcOne brochure this came with the ComfaGear head gear not the ComfaGear II. The included sweat bands (two, one front and one rear) are closed with velcro. Its not bad by any means but like anything velcro, fibrous material and hair caught in the closure will lessen it's ability to hold. My gut feeling is it will do the job intended. The helmet gear is fully adjustable both up and down and fore and aft to suit most users. I can't say whether or not it is good enough to wear all day without discomfort as I only had it on my head about a half hour. Between the lightness of the helmet and the included gear, it should work for all but the most demanding usage. As a hobbiest it will be more than enough for my modest needs. I can't say how this may compare to the likes of an ESAB or Viking for daily wear as all I've ever used over the years is a fibermetal pipliner style with a fixed lens, your basic Central Electric A/D and my current Jackson Safety with a fixed shade glass lens. The clarity of the weld puddle is at least on par with the gold coated fixed shade Jackson with an older but still good cover plate. The model included both an inner and outer Z87 cover plates and a spare front. Both inner and outer are polycarbonate/ lexan - the outer being curved upon install. It has a push button on the inside to aid removal of the outer. Conclusion... The shell is nice and lightweight. The headgear is comfortable and is highly adjustable. The AD filter is fast to respond and has a fair amount of settings. Grind mode requires the helmets removal. Personally I wouldn't grind with any hood but that's just my preference. Is it a top end Helmet? No, but it doesn't carry the price tag either. Cons? I haven't used it long enough to tell.
