Decent kit for Noobs to brewing
Let me start out by saying, I had already purchased the Brooklyn Brew Shop recipe book a long time ago. I never actually used the book until recently, I went on a beer making binge one weekend. I'm fairly new to brewing, but have made a couple 5 gallon batches so far. My first brew, was so-so--a little bland and not a whole lot of flavor. My second one was great, lots of hops, lots of flavor. So I wanted to start experimenting with flavors. The great thing about Brooklyn Brew kits and recipe books, they are made for 1 gallon batches which is perfect for being able to test out beer flavors/recipes. I ordered this set and also went out to my local brew supply store to pick up ingredients for a Porter I did at the same time (recipe from the book). I really like the concept of the kits--they are simplified, pre-measured, and have everything you need. I just wasn't too happy with the quality/taste of the beer. I love Chili Ales and everything spicy, so I was hoping to get a really tasty beer with some spice. Beer taste and styles are completely subjective, so you may like this beer. It reminded me of my first brew, a little bland and with a mild spice that wasn't overpowering. However--someone who likes Hefeweizen or wheat style beers, may really love this. Granted, this is a different beer style than the Porter I brewed at the same time--but I wanted to note the differences I noticed between the two--the one I made following the recipe had more flavor--and my guess is because I had the grain freshly milled at the local store and fresh hops and yeast. It's possible the temperatures during transit may have affected the kit? A more accurate comparison would be if I did the same recipe from the book and the kit obviously, which maybe I'll do down the road and update. Overall, it's not a bad set, especially if you're new to brewing or want to get a gift for someone, it's a great way to experiment. It's easy, convenient and pre-measured. Minimal instructions included, but it directs you to the website that has more details. Note that this set does not come with the gallon jug and other equipment, purely just ingredients. There is another kit that comes with the jug if needed.

Great for beginners or hobbyists!
This review may change, based on the outcome of my brewing! I've previously bought a beer making kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop, they do simplify the brewing process and I believe really set you up for success. I like their instructional videos, and their written instructions are well worded and easy to follow. If you have a question and email them they respond very quickly (within a couple of hours for me). The only complaint I have with this refill kit is that it does not come with sanitizer. The original kit had all the ingredients plus a little packet of sanitizer. I had to order some from Star San separately. I do wish it came with the sanitizer, since it's something you don't just pick up at the store, and other than that if you have bought a kit previously you will have everything you need to brew. It's a small nit-pick, and now I think I have enough sanitizer to last forever, but I really wish they included it. Unless you already have brewing equipment, you may want to start with a kit, since it has almost everything you need, as well as advice on the couple of things (a pot, a funnel, some honey and a spoon) that is not in the kit. The gear in the kit is well made and pretty durable, I think it's a great value for starting out compared to buying things piece-meal, which is what I was originally considering. The kit is completely re-usable and can be used to make hard cider with a hard cider refill from Brooklyn Brew Shop as well. The kit makes you feel very competent when you're brewing, their statement that if you can make oatmeal you can make beer seems very true. I'm on day three of my brew, we'll see how the beer comes out and I'll update after bottling!

Another excellent Brooklyn mix.
I'm new to home brewing and love Brooklyn's ingredient kits. I'm also a big fan of all-grain brewing without any extracts - if I wanted someone else to extract flavors and put them in a beer, I'd just buy the stuff that's already brewed wouldn't I? This kit had an interesting result. Food + beer pairing beyond just the regular "pizza and beer"-type of situation is welcome in my house. We like to try anything once. This saison came out very light bodied and, being my first beligian, I was a little disappointed by how quickly it lost carbonation. That part is my fault no doubt. I used honey to prime instead of agave, so the sugar was definitely off. I'm also sure I'm at fault for how spicy this brew turned out. The jalapeño flavor was spot on, almost overtook the subtlety of the saison. But, wow... Out of the 10 12oz beers that I made, only 1 person managed to drink an entire bottle. If you're really into spicy food (which I am) I would still advise to be careful with the jalapeño. I added a larger one at the last 5 mins of the boil - seeds and all. I would say that if I did this brew again, I would definitely cut back or completely leave out any seeds from the jalapeño.

1 US gallon
This kit is for 1 US gallon, only 3.5 Liters. Still in the fermentor, so I'm not sure how it will turn out having diluted it to produce 1 UK gallon.

Jalapeno Saison - great kit, OK beer
Jalapeno Saison is a pretty decent beer. Easy to follow instructions. Good taste, good looking beer. I found the recipe called for maybe too much agave syrup during the boil and the beer comes off a little sweeter than I'd prefer. Yeast liked it though and went to town on fermenting. Beer is not spicy like you'd think, but does taste a bit like the pepper. Not-Spicy-Jalapeno isn't very great.
