AMAZON.COM Celestron’s popular Ultima 80mm Zoom Spotting Scope offers images that are noticeably brighter and sharper than entry level 60mm spotters. The Ultima 80 is a refractor style spotting scope with an Achromatic objective lens. Excellent light transmission is assured by multi-layer anti-reflection coatings on the objective lens as well as on the zoom eyepiece and the BAK-4 prisms. The multi-coated 80mm objective lens delivers 77% brighter views than a 60mm scope, and the built in zoom lens produces sharp images from 20X all the way up to 60X magnification. The Ultima 80 features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. Including the eyepiece the Ultima 80 measures just over 18 inches long and weighs about 3.6 pounds. The rubber eyecup can be removed to expose a standard “T-thread” for attaching a camera. I like the 45* angled eyepiece because I can use a shorter tripod to support the spotting scope while viewing or while taking pictures with a small camera attached to the eyepiece. The focus ranges from 27 feet to the horizon with just a few turns of the focus knob. When I fold down the rubber eye cup I can keep my glasses on and see the whole 2 degree field of view at 20X magnification. With my glasses on I need very little focus adjustment while I crank the zoom eyepiece from 20X up to 60X. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Ultima 80 gives me a sharp image either way. The drawback of the tradition crown and flint achromatic lens used in the Ultima 80 Zoom Spotting Scope is a bit of false color, also known as blue fringing or chromatic aberration. Blue fringing seems well controlled at 20X magnification, but it becomes increasingly noticeable as I zoom up to 60X. Celestron also offers the Ultima 80ED and the Regal 80 F-ED spotting scopes which use exotic ED glass lenses to virtually eliminate blue fringing and produce the sharpest possible high power views. Shot at 20X zoom at about 20 yards, cropped 50% (Click here to see uncropped) Shot at 20X zoom at about 50 yards, cropped 30% Shot at 20X zoom, uncropped but reduced in size (Click here to see at 60X zoom) Shot at 20X zoom at about 50 yards, cropped 30% FROM THE MANUFACTURER The Ultima 80mm offers a step up in aperture from the 65mm, offering 50% brighter images. The 80mm refractor features excellent multi-coated optics packed into a portable and durable refractor design and it comes standard with a 20-60x zoom eyepiece. This series was designed to perform well in a range of viewing situations, making it a great all-around optical instrument. Youll love it for observing nature and long distance spotting. The green metal optical tube allows for subtle observation in any nature environment. Ultima spotters are a great companion for any nature or outdoor enthusiast. See more

Sample rifle target photos
Added 2/9/2016: I've used it on 300-yard targets now, and my .223" / 5.56 mm holes are visible, especially on white paper. Holes in the colored part are harder, of course, but visible. I also want to mention that the focus knob is perfect. It turns easily and smoothly, without being loose. It's placed on top, just behind the tripod mounting point, so you can rest your hand over the balance point of the scope and gently roll one finger over the focus knob, causing very little motion in the image. [Original text -->] I read a lot of reviews and Q & A's on Amazon before purchasing the Celestron 80mm Ultima Zoom, and I have a little to add for future shoppers. While I hope to use this for viewing wildlife and maybe the moon and neighboring planets, I bought it mainly for rifle shooting, to see little holes in paper downrange. The photos I'm posting today are all the same shot through the scope, left full-frame to show how my smartphone camera sees it, and cropped to better see the holes. The target is 200 yards away, and the holes are .223 inch / 5.56mm. The grid lines on the targets are spaced at 1 inch / 25mm. Camera was an LG G4 smartphone, mounted to the Celestron's eyepiece with a Gosky Universal Cell Phone Adapter Mount, also purchased from Amazon. Photo conditions were less than ideal: a very gray afternoon, shooting through 200 yards of light rain. The full-frame photo was reduced in size from 5212 x 2988 down to 1600 x 900, in hopes Amazon won't ruin it with extreme compression. The other two were severely cropped, but left at full resolution to show detail. It was taken at 60X, the maximum zoom, and the image suffers a bit from being pushed to the max, but not terribly. The colors aren't as sharp as at the lower end of the zoom range, and as other reviewers have mentioned, that's a compromise. If you want perfect sharpness through the whole zoom range, buy the ED (Extra Dispersion) version of the scope. It's built with lens elements made of more exotic glass that corrects the focus of the different colors of light. It will cost you about 4 times as much. This Ultima 80 is good enough for me. Something I hadn't noticed until I viewed the photos is the curvature of the bottom board of the target frame. That's not bent wood, it's a defect of the scope, called pincushion distortion. If I was using the scope for some kind of architectural photography, where straight lines must show straight, this would be a problem, but I bought this to see where holes are punched in paper, and a bit of curvature is no problem at all. If you're photographing duck on a pond surface and don't want your water horizon to be curved, position the scope so that horizon is in the center of the frame. The top board of the target frame is centered, and it doesn't look bent at all. Better yet, back off the zoom to a lower ratio and get straighter lines and a sharper image. The two detail shots aren't perfectly sharp, but more than good enough to see every hole, even the ones in the dark blue target. I'm impressed. The range I go to also has targets at 300 yards. That might be pushing this scope's capability. I'll try it some time when I have better weather and have settled on ammunition I can trust to fly straight that far. On the drive home from the range I passed a tree with a huge new nest in it, and today a bald eagle was perched near it. But I was cold and tired, and if I'd stopped and got out of the car to reach the scope in the back, the eagle would have left. Would have been a great inaugural wildlife shot for my new spotting scope, but I'm left with only the memory of it, and you'll have to picture it in your mind until you get your own spotting scope and venture into eagle country. Hope you like yours; it's just right for me, at a price I can justify.

Inexpensive but not for spotting scope
I purchase a couple low end spotting scopes, under $200 after reading several reviews. I thought this one would be good for reviewing targets made by 22 cal. It is good for 50 and 100y and you can see clearly. However when getting out to 200y the spatter targets work well and can be seen but it becomes more difficult. On paper, black center target areas are difficult to distinguish holes. You might still get by but not all the time and not in shadow areas. Bright sun on the target would work. At 250y, 300y etc I don't believe you could ues this scope although I did not try it. I am sending it back and moving up to $350 and buying a Vortex.

Good but Chromatic Aberration at High Power
No argument, you get a decent scope for the money. I bought mine off Amazon 10 years ago and it's still going strong. At low magnification, you get a decent image. Crank up to 60x and there's significant CA. Most of which, if you're using an adapter to get pictures, can be removed in your post processing software. For casual viewing, it's definitely a fine scope, just don't expect to get crystal clear images at anything past mid point on the power. These pics were taken with my phone through the viewfinder. They are straight out of the phone without any processing. Obviously, I could have done a better job aligning the phone with the eye piece.

Pretty good but not useful for my purposes
I tried a Gosky 20-60x60 mm scope first and found it too dark and cheaply made (plastic barrel). The celestron 80mm scope was quite a bit nicer. Brighter, better made (aluminum barrel) and had a better (astronomical) eyepiece. However it is rather heavy for a light tripod and I found the thing very jittery. It works best under these conditions at relatively low power ( 20 to 30, say) but at 20 power a pair of larger binoculars will be brighter and more immersive. So I sent it back. If you have a really solid tripod it would be better but then you lose tha advantage of easy portability.

Detail was difficult to observe and it only got worse with increased magnification
Bought this for birding / target shooting etc. Used it in a variety of situations and lighting conditions from bright sunlight to near dark whilst watching Otters. The size is quite bulky to be carried in a mid sized rucksack, but its managable and relatively light. I was very unimpressed with the optics. It was relatively bright at the lower end of the magnification, as it should be for the size of the objective lens, but no brighter than my 8x32 binoculars. The main problem (and the reason I have since sold it on Ebay) was the image quality, it just wasn't very sharp. Detail was difficult to observe and it only got worse with increased magnification. A lump of a scope with optics not suitable for serious birding and too large for the shooting/archery range.

Bright and clear image for the price.
Overall I'm happy with the price / performance of this scope both for bird watching / wildlife and some casual astronomy. As some have commented there is some chromatic aberration using this scope, but as is usual with CA this is noticeable in areas of extreme contrast, looking at the Moon for example, but for the price point this is not a surprise and not especially noticeable when bird watching. If you want zero CA you're looking at the wrong price range! Overall the image is quite sharp and bright and very pleasing, certainly good enough for my eyes when bird watching to pick out details and identify the species being observed. the scope is relatively light for it's size and the carry bag is reasonably handy. A couple of niggles, as some have pointed out the scope cant really be used with the carry bag, it really needs a velcro or other flap over the focus knob to make it accessible, then I think it will work "in the bag". The front dust cap is a bit weedy and pops off with the slightest touch, the eyepiece cap is much firmer and pushes over the rubber eyecup and has a tendency to also remove the eyecup leaving the camera adaptor thread exposed. Although I have a T2 camera adaptor I have not used the scope for digiscoping, I own some fairly good telephoto lenses and this scope is certainly no match for them optically but if you don't have such exotic gear in your camera bag I can see where this scope could be of some use.

Great spotting scope for our harbour view
Bought this for our new apartment which overlooks the beautiful Poole Harbour and Purbeck hills. We're about 7 miles from Corfe Castle and can just about make it out with the naked eye on a good day; this scope allows us to pick out the shape of the castle towers clearly. On boats in the harbour which are approx 2 miles away we can clearly see the name of the vessel and count the people on deck. We're hoping we'll be able to spot dolphins and seals when they make their way into the harbour. We already had a good tripod but invested in a decent fluid head to give good control. Yes, of course for this price you don't get perfect optics, so there is some aberration around the outer edge, but I think it's acceptable at this end of the market. If we had a lot more cash to splash we'd have probably spent a few more £100s and bought a better one, but for just browsing the view and keeping an eye on shipping it's perfect for us!

I received this scope the first time and it must have been already returned as the box was sealed with tape and bulging checked the scope found screw in eye piece had fallen out sent back for replacement Amazon unable to change had to have refund and re order lost out on black Friday price. But new scope arrived in makers box well packed and in one piece the reason for ordering this scope was for target shooting and other club members have the same scope and they are very happy with price and performance for the price

Good but could easily be better
Pretty good. I compared it to a Gosky model and there was a positive difference in image but not a huge deal breaker. The Celestron is let down by an eye peace with falls out all the time and a lens cap cover which isn’t attached. Decent quality. Moon looks great
