Designed to carry 24 soldiers to drop into combat, along with being able to carry a maximum bomb load of 14,000 lbs to help support after they landed, the Short Stirling was imagined in the late 1930s and flew into action on its maiden flight in 1938 and into battle after modifications to assist with its difficult take offs and landings as well as delays in production in 1941. The MK III was introduced in 1943, sporting higher speeds and more room among several other improvements to keep up with the aviation technology during WWII. This Short Stirling MK III was operated by the RAF No. 199 Squadron in 1943 as a standard night bomber serving over 60 operations. Starting on D-Day, No. 199 mostly concentrated on missions used for radar-jamming and assisting in confusing the enemy as the main bomber force headed out for its main objective.
