DEWALT D55140 compressor review
I tested using a DEWALT 51238K nail gun; driving 1.5" 18 gauge brads through 1/2" MDF and into a moderately dense 2x2 as a test, about as fast as I cared to place them. The compressor had no problem feeding the gun; when the pressure did drop the tank recharged nicely, its not too loud. I'm very happy. One minor initial annoyance: The tank charged perfectly after the break-in; but as soon as I turned the regulator to pressurise the main line, the all the air bleeds out from what feels like the back of the regulator knob, and line pressure is stuck at 0. I searched for a solution online and didnt find anything; Rather than just return the unit I took the black faceplate off, charged the tank for a few seconds (10-20psi) and had a feel around as I turned the regulator - it appeared the air was coming directly from the base of the regulator knob; I discharged the tank, slipped a small flat blade under the retaining pin pushing it out, away from the barrel (you can see it as a shiny dot near the base of the knob) and fully unscrewed the knob. Inside I find a grease covered spring, and under that a plastic valve cap; I gently lifted both out with a pair of needle nose pliers and it is immediately obvious why the valve is leaking - the O ring that is supposed to be around the base of the floating value is sitting loose in the bottom of the chamber. To fix it: Extract the O-ring and check for damage, mine had none - so I wiped a little of the excess grease onto it and put it back onto the bottom of the plastic valve; put the value in the base of the barrel, put the spring back on top of the value; and the knob on top of the spring, and screwed it about halfway down. I pressed the retaining pin back in and turned the knob fully counterclockwise to check it was properly secure and re-assembled the unit. Power-Up; tank charges, turn the regulator to varying pressures from 20-130 the outlet pressurises. A 5 minute fix, saving me the return hassle. As I said, I'm very pleased with the unit - if it had just worked I would give it 5 stars; because I had to fix it I'm giving it 4 and I'm leaving this review with my fix in case others have a similar problem and feel like fixing it themselves. The usual disclaimers apply;

DEWALT D55140 REview 12-10-2010
I have owned DEWALT D55140 approx. 2 months. It performs the way I needed it to perform. It is light weight and quieter than other air compressors this size. It has given me no problems. I take very good care of my equipment and fellow the maintenance instructions which are not difficult to do. I use it for my 16 ga. air nail gun and to keep my auto ties filled with air at their proper level. It is very dependable so far as to my needs. I keep it in my garage in order to air up my tires as needed, but when I do some house maintenance: it is very handy to run my air nail guns I cannot lift very heavy equipment anymore because of some back and neck problems and I do not like noisy air compressors. This fills the bill so to speak. I drain the air out of the tank after each use which is not hard to do at all. As I go thru the garage I still look at it (because it shape will get your attention) sitting there ready to air something up when I need it. I do not regret buying it. Amazon.com had a very reasonable price $125.00 at the time I purchased it. It saves me from having to start up my 25 gal. air compressor each time I have a small project to perform.

Faulty from factory but ok after fix.
As stated by others, I ignored the warning of the faulty valve thinking mine would be fine but it would not provide psi after trying to use it until I took apart the valve and fixed the O ring seating. Sure if works as intended beside a that but keep in mind, if you need to adjust your psi often, do not get this unit. The ring comes out of place almost every time you have to lower the psi. If you keep it on a certain PSI, then get it because it’s a solid unit besides from this fault they do not seem to care to fix.

Trim Compressor First Impressions
I have had this unit about 4 weeks now. I do small home repairs and upgrades so its use is sparingly. Having said that my first impressions are positive. The unit totes easily becuase of its compact size and weight. I tested it to see if it held its pressure (unit just sitting under full tank pressure and 90PSI on the regulated side). It did well holding the max pressure and dropping off just 3 psi after about 3 hours. With an18 guage nailer its cycle time is quite low for a small tank (no numbers to offer, just observation). I tried it with my framing nailer (yes I know it is not meant for that) just to see what would happen and it cycled after every 2 nails. So don't abuse it. It is quiet! As others have spoken it would have been nice if they had put rubber feet on the backside so when you stand it upright it has a padded rest. I will update this with further info as it becomes necessary. An update 6 months later: Still working just fine, no problems and it is a delight to have on the job as it is easy to transport and store. Nice to have it for the trim work I do.

Great little unit...
I love this unit; it’s light, quiet and more than handles the job it was designed for. I do a lot of residential renovation trim and finish work were most times the homeowner is at home while the work is being done. This air compressor is so quiet, when the motor kicks in to recharge I can comfortably work beside it. During recharging, my larger heavy duty air compressor would spook pets and frighten small children, so much so that most times I would often leave it outside and run a hose into through the home to my work area. This is not very realistic during the winter months or cold wet days and at the very least creates a trip hazard. For small jobs, this unit has even handled my framing air nail gun. No more extension cords or rolls of air hose for me, all I need is a 12-foot hose and I can plug into any normal household electrical outlet. At only 25 pounds, I don’t think I have to mention how much my back loves this unit.

Great for small jobs and light/med use
I've had mine for about a year now and have been very happy with it. It is great for general use for someone that does not rely on it all day everyday. Being a smaller unit, it does come on quite often when using. If you have a few tools, tire filling, compressed air for cleaning things out then it is perfect. If your looking for something for larger jobs and daily use I would consider a larger unit. The build quality is solid and it's not too heavy. Read the manual as you should drain it from the valve when done for the day to avoid water collection in the tank. The only reason I could see anyone being unhappy with this, is if they plain and simply bought the wrong tool for the job they need. This is a small compressor, use it as such. I can't tell you how much money this has saved me over buying those compressed air cans for cleaning dust out of PCs.

Durability is lacking
I've owned 3 of these and like them for small trim projects. Relatively quiet and light weight. The first one lasted 3 years and the next 2 lasted about a year each. Reliability of these units for me has been poor. The only reason I bought another one is it fits perfectly in the location in the van otherwise I would not recommend buying another. We have converted over to cordless trim nailers for the most part so this compressor wont see a lot of action.

Works great!
It is light so easy to transport and it is quiet. I don't think it is as quiet as advertised but you can still speak over the sound of the compressor running. Powerful enough to run my Brad and pin nailers but not recommended for filling tires in your garage. I use a adapter so we are able to run 2 pin nailers at same time and it has no trouble keeping up. I would recommend this compressor for finishing work.

Compact, Quiet, great for small jobs
Good for pumping tires fast, blowing dust, dirt and debris off of workspace. I already have a semi-commercial compressor but I hated dragging it to my garage every time I needed it for small jobs. it also fills the void for when those cheap cigarette style compressors aren't enough to do the job. This is a light duty compressor so don't plan on using it for impact, ratchet, air chisel etc.
