Made of heat resistant cobalt and ground to a heavy duty 135° split point. Common flute and overall length for minimal adjustment during tool changes. Precision ground for high degree of concentricity between shank and body diameter. Ideal for drilling in tough, high tensile strength materials. Expands the size range capacity of a portable drill chuck. Common flute and overall length for minimal adjustment during tool changes. Precision ground for high degree of concentricity between shank and body diameter. Ideal for drilling in low and medium tensile strength materials.

Manufactured to National Aerospace standard 907. When run in a counterclockwise direction (right-hand cut) spiral fluted tools evacuate chips up and out of the cut to reduce clogging. Round shanks allow use with a wide variety of toolholding systems. Gold oxide is a thinner oxide surface treatment than black oxide typically used to identify cobalt steel tools; performance is similar to uncoated tools. Cobalt steel tools are similar to high-speed steel, but with more cobalt for improved performance when cutting harder metals such as stainless steel or nickel alloys.

Cobalt Hardened for Hard Metals
Cuts through stainless and hardened steels where titanium and others fail. Use some oil to preserve its edge for longer life.

Stainless steel
Just a couple of holes in 1/2" ss.

Quality bit
Bought a cheaper bit 1st - it failed immediately so I ordered this bit from Drill America. This bit drilled the 16 holes I needed and was still going strong at the end. Drill America bits stand up to the test.

Need a hole in your head?
Ok, maybe not the noggin! But for drilling steel this bit worked as a cobalt bit should. No issues, and it cut fast. Drilled through 1/4 plate steel pretty quickly using a 20 volt cordless drill. Quality seems good and was cheaper than big brand names. Like the reduced shank so i could use in 1/2" drill. Nothing worse then having a bunch of drill bits with the size worn off from slippage, so pick up a couple.

worked well enough at a difficult task
Lasted about 2 hours of use against hardened steel before starting to dull. Would last a lot longer against mild steel and even longer with soft metals.

Very sharp.
Drilled 15 holes through 1 in plate steel just fine. I used tap magic and a drill press.

Legit
Had a project to drill 4x 5/8 holes in hardened steel. I had ordered 3 Cobalt hss bits from two different brands. Each failed drilling only about an 1/8" of the material. Ordered the bit from Drill America and finished the first hole in 20sec or less and went on to do the other three holes without issue using the single bit.

Stepped shank drill doesn't run true
I bought a 33/64" stepped shank drill to cut close fit clearance holes for a 1/2-13 fastener. I mounted the drill on the 3 shank flats and noted significant runout (I'm guessing at least 1/16" runout) at the tip of the drill. So I tried mounting it on the 1/2" cylindrical surface. With the drill in that position, the bit cuts a hole that is 17/32" in diameter. So, it appears neither the stepped shank or the flats allow the drill to run concentric with the cutting tip. As a result I'll be avoiding Drill America bits in the future.
