PRODUCT DESCRIPTION With this simple tool you can easily measure and adjust the thickness of a Finish to make sure it will spray well in a paint sprayer. The thickness of coatings can be thin like water or thick like honey. This flow property of a coating is called viscosity. When the coating is too thick for the paint sprayer, It will come out slowly and will spatter, this also can cause visible droplets or a bumpy finish on the surface you are spraying. When the coating is the right viscosity, the spray pattern will look like a fine mist and the finish will be very smooth. FROM THE MANUFACTURER Thickness/Viscosity measuring Cup - all Earlex models only.

Run time is determined by lifting the cup out of the coating and timing how long it takes for the coating to completely drain from the cup. To determine the viscosity of a coating, simply dip the cup in the coating until completely full and time how long it takes to run out of the cup. This simple gravity tool allows the user to time the flow of the coating (Note: Color of cup may vary). Dial in and atomize your paint sprayer properly with the help of the viscosity cup by verifying the coating's viscosity prior to spraying. Tool for quickly checking and measuring the viscosity or thickness of paint, varnish, stains, inks, syrups, liquids and more.

Couldn't get it locally, this one was perfect
I looked at craft and hardware stores locally but couldn't find one. This one was exactly what I needed.

Possible new design?
The cup I received has a hooked handle and is not at all like the picture. Either it’s a updated version or a knockoff. That being said, it’s right on 10 seconds with water. If it’s solvent resistant, it may actually be a better design. I’ll update this review after I get a chance to use it. Update: Has stood up to acetone and lacquer thinner just fine. Works great.

Does the job
For the guy who was concerned about this being an "actual" Ford #4 cup, for the purpose of anyone other than scientists doing laboratory work it is close enough. For spray painting, paint viscosity recommendations typically give a range of viscosities that are acceptable. For example, one chart I have says for oil based enamels, laquers and urethanes on wood the viscosity should be 32 - 48 seconds in a Ford #4 cup. That is a 16 second range. Anything within that range is acceptable. Any finer adjustments that are needed can be made with the settings on the gun. As you get to know your gun, you will find where in the range you should target the viscosity for best results. So the viscosity cup only needs to be reasonably close to an "actual" Ford #4 for use in spray painting. This cup will get you there. A true Ford #4 cup, which can be used for measuring viscosity in a laboratory, costs a couple hundred dollars. This cup costs less than five dollars and works fine for spray painting.

Does the job
A bit pricey for a piece of plastic though it will measure viscosity to a goodish degree.
