PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Wooden fences tend to warp due to weather making locking a latch difficult. Hardware Essentials Self Adjustable Gate Latches adjust with your gate so lock works over time. Available in several finishes. FROM THE MANUFACTURER Self Adjusting Gate Latches are designed for out-swinging doors and gates where a self closing latch is desired. Gate Latch Bar plate can be mounted on the gate or post for versatility. Can be used for left or right hand installations and can be used with a padlock for security. Latch Bar has 1" of vertical movement that helps compensate for gate sag. The small pre-drilled hole in the release lever is for rigging a cord (not included) that would release latch from opposite side of gate. Must drill a hole through post for rigging cord installation. Stainless Steel material is recommended for treated lumber, coastal and exterior applications.

So much better than the latch at Home Depot

This latch is SO much more sturdy and durable that that latches they sell at Home Depot and Lowe’s. I’m using it to replace one of those that broke after about four years.

Gate latch

Latch is very flimsy. Makes lot of noise when closing. Edges are sharp and unfinished. Easy to get cut when in use.

Solid. Stainless. Steel.

This latch is solid in all respects. It's clearly stainless steel, which is what I need with salty breezes on Cape Cod. Installed easily. Directions were clear as to pilot holes (3/32"). All screws were supplied with the latch. Directions did not mention why there are two types of screws. You might see it as obvious but just in case: 4 round-head screws for the back plate of the latch itself. 2 round-head screws for the outer side of the plate that holds the latch arm. 2 flat-head screws for the inner side of the plate that holds the latch arm. These sit flush with the plate so the latch arm can be adjusted up or down. My latch had one extra screw, just in case of droppage. You know, gravity happens. I used an impact driver on the screws. Worked great. If using a screw driver you might want to lubricate the screws with a bit of wax or soap so they screw in more easily. So far I am very pleased with the solid quality of this latch. If there is rust in the future it will start with the screws. If that happens I will update this review. For now it is a solid five stars.

Love this latch

There is no better latch of this variety. It closes the smoothest, lasts beautifully, and as my fence gates sag over time (always happens), these adjust. I've replaced all my latches with these. This said, I only gave 4 instead of 5 stars because I feel the screws are now made of softer metal than before - more likely to strip when installing (wasn't an issue with earlier versions of this product I bought years ago).

good quality stainless

In our salt water environment, the formulation of the stainless matters. There are stainless formulations that have enough iron in them to hold a magnet. In our salty air those formulations rust pretty quickly. This product holds a magnet but very weakly, so we can expect years of use before the rusting destroys it. There are iron free formulations, which never rust or weaken. Those usually come from boating suppliers & last a very long time. You can test this quality with a magnet, though with mail order, you own it before you can test it.
