It works fairly well BUT ONLY WHEN I HOLD and COUNT PAST THE MAXIMUM TIMER on highest setting
I purchased the dark purple unit and received a unit in the typical branded Conair box. I have fine, poker straight hair that is reluctant to take and hold a curl. I found on the highest heat, for the longest duration, this product would NOT properly curl my hair. The end result was barely a curl at the end and a very subtle wave that quickly fell out in the humidity (40% humid here). I noticed the 12 second setting only lasted ~9.5 seconds (when timed with stopwatch on phone) because the countdown happens starting when the curling iron begins to suck in your hair --- NOT when the beeping starts after loading is completed. I called customer support and was told to return the unit as it sounded defective. I received my replacement quickly. I believe it to be hotter, however the timing is exactly the same. My hair is long and as such i lose a fair amount of time during ingestion. WHAT I FOUND, however, is if I count to five AFTER the beeping stops - I can cook my hair for longer which results in the curl/wave I desire. This curl lasts longer than most curling irons though I've definitely had better from one of those expensive ceramic irons where you have to use a glove as it gets so hot there's no clasping mechanism on the wand or it'd leave a kink. (that other curling iron will hold curly queue curls that make you look like you were born with curly hair even by the lake for a full day-- ... this one is better for waves if you have stubborn hair). When adding the extra time on the highest setting -- I have curly queue curls that last up to a couple hours, then waves. By the next morning I have additional body and just a subtle flip/wave at the end of my hair. Which meets my needs, as I really just wanted an easier way to get wavy hair. As for the unit it's fairly easy to use. You definitely need to be mindful about maintaining narrow chunks that aren't too deep or thick or you won't get the right amount of heat, and the unit is very likely to choke on anything which exceeds its expectations. Most times the unit chokes on your hair it's easy to fix. A couple times it took a bit of careful unweaving and untangling to release my hair. You can burn yourself with this, if you inadvertently touch the open end where the hair goes in to your head while 'cooking' (that's the side that must face you anyway). However it's harder to burn yourself than with a normal iron. This unit isn't much faster if at all than a normal iron however automating the winding/ingestion of your hair does make it go a bit faster than old fashioned winding by hand -- and it's easier on your body because you don't have to twist your wrist while holding it in an awkward position. Because of the required position of the unit (always facing your head directly) the only way to get the back of my hair is to pull my hair to the side at an angle (not all that unusual for any iron though more so with this one) so you have to fluff your hair a bit to hide the part this creates naturally at the back of your head. This unit isn't ideal for the small piece by the front of my face (bangs-ish layer) because of the angle required due to size of the unit.

Thick Heavy Hair Spiral Curling Success
I bought this to use on myself, my daughter and my niece with slight fear that it would get someone's hair stuck in it requiring cutting it off. Due to that I didn't want to use it on myself or let the girls use it on themselves. I thought a second person using it to curl our hair would be the best was to go. So I ended up doing it to my niece's hair. She has VERY Long, VERY Thick Straight hair that if you can get it to curl, typically doesn't last more than a couple of hours. So curling it the night before Sunday church services was risking that it would be gone by morning but we went ahead anyway. 1. The hair must be clean, dry & WITHOUT any product. Very important to prevent getting tangled in the curling process. 2. We used it on its highest heat setting and then there's a setting for the number of seconds before the beeping alarm (like 3 beeps) sounds telling you to release the curler's grip on the hair. These are the recommended settings for the tightest curl result. Which is why we picked it for her hard to curl hair. FYI - It's a button with 3 presets (I wanna say like 9 seconds, 13 seconds & 17 seconds but don't remember exactly and it's at my niece's house sorry). 3. I recommend for thick, hard to curl, long hair you use 1/2 inch sections at a time. You must use the curler with a very well labeled side always face towards the skull. It took me about an hour to do my niece's hair but it was beautiful when finished. 4. For extremely long hair like her's, about the bottom 2-3 inches of a strand wouldn't curl. NEVER FEAR!! Simply hold the roller lower and place the hair into the channel at the top of the part that didn't curl. It will curl from the roller to the end. 5. When finished if you're going to sleep on it, then you're gonna want to spray it well for overnight hold. Otherwise work use your fingers to separate the curls how you like then add a little spray. CONS - The curler itself is pretty heavy and top heavy on the rounded end. So there's no way I could've done it to myself. If you've got thinner hair, curling it all shouldn't take as long. WARNING - The hair gets extremely hot. Touching it immediately following the curling smarts. I gave this 4/5 Stars due to the weight and my inability to use it on myself. I may try it at some point but it's awesome for me to use on my niece and daughter. UPDATE - I read some other reviews and decided to add this note. If your hair is getting stuck, it's because you're trying to put too much hair thru the channel guide at one time (1/2 inch pieces are best), your hair is tangled and not freshly combed/brushed or your holding the curler to close to the scalp. HOWEVER if your hair starts to tangle the curler beeps at you and immediately stops rolling. Thus alerting you to release the pressure from clamping the rollers together. Like someone else said there's a bit of a learning curve to it. Once that's mastered it's really simple. Photos are of my niece's hair right after I finished curling. So this is no product and before sleeping on it. However she did say still curly next day.
