Shame on Jacobs
Jacobs claims a total indicator runout (TIR) of .004 inch (roughly .1 mm). The one I got is much worse than that. The action on it feels gritty too, with a lot of backlash in the screw. The Chinese are perfectly capable of making high precision hardware, but sadly, this is not such an example. Jacobs should find a better shop to make products they stamp their brand on. Shame on them. Not recommended.

Good chuck for the money
I put this on a 1930's Buffalo drill press that still had the original chuck on it. It's not as fancy as some of the newer keyless designs, but you can't go wrong with Jacobs.

This is nothing like the old Jacobs chucks which were made in the ...
This chuck came installed on my Accu Tapper thread tapping machine. The machine was made within the last seven years or so, and I assume that the chuck is of similar vintage (~2011). From the start, the chuck felt rough and I had to tighten the jaws really hard to prevent the taps from slipping. I finally decided the other day to open it and see if it needs new grease. I was in shock when I saw the machining of the center body. This is nothing like the old Jacobs chucks which were made in the U.S. The three holes for the jaws had grooves from shavings which were dragged along during a hasty drilling/boring operation. There were huge burrs at every point where the holes broke into open spaces. Everything about the machining of the center body looks really bad. From the outside, one wouldn't know. The sleeve and jaws look good. The Jacobs name and model number were not stamped into the body. They were etched or laser marked. No mention of the country of origin (my old Jacobs chucks say U.S.A. on them). I am afraid Jacobs went the way of "shareholder value".
