This Vacuum Sucks (A Compliment)
In 2008 my husband and I purchased a Kenmore Upright Vacuum Cleaner. It worked very well and we didn't need to take it in for very many repairs. This year (2023) it reached its retirement age. I researched various vacuums for features, product reviews, complaints, and prices. I also subscribe to a magazine the tests and reviews products and does not accept any advertising, and put together a spreadsheet to help me make a decision. I chose the Kenmore Elite because it satisfies my needs. When it arrived the box was intact (very important to me). Inside, the ends of both the top and the bottom were securely held in place by heavy-duty styrofoam and each of the attachments was separately wrapped in plastic. A kudo for this product, practically everything inside is recyclable!!! Our cats also enjoy playing in it. The owner's manual is right on top so it can be read before removing the entire item from the box. The assembly was a snap. The only tool required is a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw from the bottom element, attach the top, and screw them together. The top and bottom were easy to join and fit together very snugly. The screw is long and that gave me confidence that the vacuum won't fall apart with use. The height adjuster has five settings: "high" and "med high" for bare floors, "I" for medium pile carpeting and "med lo" and "lo" for carpets. I checked it out and could see the suction head going up and down and the brushes "retracting". The "lo" setting can also be used on bare floors. There are two bright headlights that make it easy to see what you are vacuuming, and a dirt sensor that lights up to let you know if you're catching everything. The total length of the power cord is 40 feet long (from the outside of the vacuum to the plug), of which the first two feet is the distance from the outside of the vacuum cleaner to the floor. That's long enough to clean our great room and part of the back bedroom without having to move the plug from place to place. It has three attachments that fit on the vacuum when they're not in use: a long crevice tool, a combination brush and the "Pet Handimate". The first attachment is pretty obvious. The combination brush has a removable brush for cleaning drapes, and stairs (bare and carpeted). The Handimate is 5.5 inches long and 4.25 inches wide and has two sets of revolving brushes. Also included is a telescopic wand that is 17 inches long and can be extended to 26 inches. The wand also has notches every 3/4 of an inch so that if you don't need the whole length you can choose your length and the button will snap securely into place. The hose is 22 inches long and has a suction control on it. The Elite also has performance/safety features: a thermal protector for the suction motor; a thermal protector for the agitator (brush) motors; a by-pass valve that protects motor overheating and damage; and an agitator overload protector should the agitator slow down or stops because of a jam. It also contains an exhaust filter in the back and the dust bag is in the front. Both are easily reachable and changing the bag and filter take no time at all. I change mine every couple of months because we have two cats. Replacement filters and dust bags can be purchased from the manufacturer but there are less expensive alternatives available from other websites. There's also a Help Line that is available Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m (EST). I tried in on our inside front door mat (the bristly kind) and it worked liked a dream. In just a few minutes it removed everything. I did have to go back and forth a few times in a couple of places but that's to be expected on something that traps dirt from the outside. It's very quiet and very light and using the well-placed and well-designed carrying make it simple to be carried up or down the stairs. I very highly recommend the Kenmore Elite Vacuum Cleaner and encourage everyone who is considering a vacuum replacement to choose this one. If you have an old Kenmore the attachments may fit on this new one (one less thing to buy). One thing that I would recommend is to find an "exploded" view that lists the parts and their names (but no part number), in the event that you may need to replace something beyond the attachments, filters and dust bags.

Phenomenal vacuum (with one major design flaw!)
Phenomenal vacuum for anyone with carpeting and pets! I’ve owned a Dyson, Bissel, and several Hoover uprights in the past; while they were all fantastic vacuums, the Kenmore Elite is easily the best vacuum I’ve ever owned. I have 2 cats that shed all year long, so I vacuum our bedrooms (carpeted) on average 3-4 times a week. The amount of stuff this vacuum manages to pick up is just incredibe; my carpets look, and more importantly, actually *feel* clean once I’m finished vacuuming. Unlike some of my other uprights in the past, this vacuum picks up just about everything on the first pass. Its suction is so strong that it even picks things up from a distance (without actually needing to roll over the area), which is great for vacuuming in corners or close to the wall. Works great on hardwood floors as well, even with the rollers on. For picking up gritty substances on hardwood (crumbs, cat litter, other “sand like” things), it works best with the rollers off; these things do tend to “bounce” if the rollers are on! Rollers automatically shut off when the vacuum is in its upright position. Yes, it’s heavy, and yes, it’s loud, but so are majority of other upright vacuums on the market. I certainly wouldn’t try using this in the same room as someone who is sleeping, but it’s not so loud that you’ll be getting noise complaints from your neighbors lol. I’d say size, weight, feel, and sound are about the same as every Hoover Wind Tunnel I’ve owned. One major flaw design—the hose. Where it connects to the vacuum is placed such that when you stretch the hose more than a few inches without physically holding onto the vacuum, it loses its balance and falls over. This is a huge flaw for anyone that likes to dust/clean with the attachments. It’s nearly impossible to use the hose without holding the vacuum, which basically negates having a long hose to begin with (initially a pro in my mind when choosing this vacuum). This design flaw makes this vacuum a poor (and potentially dangerous) choice for anyone that plans to use it on carpeted stairs. The hose diameter is also slightly smaller than most other uprights, making it so that practically all “universal” attachments aren’t compatible with the hose (without an adapter). Highly recommend purchasing a 32mm to 35mm adapter if you’d like to use additional dusting attachments (separate from those included with the vacuum); I found this adapter to work with majority of “universal” attachments available on Amazon! TL;DR If you’re looking for a quiet or lightweight vacuum, keep looking! This thing is heavy and loud (not much more than most other uprights, though!). It’s size and weight allow for its suction power; it’s an incredible vacuum for anyone with pets or allergies. Works extremely well on carpet and rugs, but does a great job on hardwood floors as well. Rollers automatically shut off when the vacuum is in its upright position. One major flaw (and the reason for the missing star)—stretching the hose more than a few inches without holding the vacuum will cause the vacuum to fall over. Not a deal breaker for me, but it does prevent this vacuum from getting a 5 star rating! Hose diameter will NOT fit most generic dusting attachments; purchase a 32mm to 35 mm adapter if you’re planning to order additional attachments!

Does the job but big and heavy
This is a preliminary review since I have only had the vacuum a few days. The product seems to be well made and it went together very easily. It has a lot of nice features and is very adjustable for different cleaning situations. It does a nice job on both carpet and floors. The upholstery attachment works well and the long cord is very helpful. However, the hose from the vacuum cleaner is fairly short and stiff. It is easy to cause the vacuum cleaner fall when using the hose with an attachment if not careful. However, I found the attachments fit my small canister vacuum hose and I use them with it. This is especially useful when dusting furniture or working on the steps. Be advised that Kenmore Elite is a very large and heavy vacuum. I would not recommend it for stairs. If you have a multilevel home, you need to be reasonably strong to move it from one level to the other. It also is not very maneuverable and cannot get into tight spaces, although you can always use the attachments for tight areas. As I said I have only had this vaccum for a few days so I cannot say anything about long term reliability. However, based on my limited experience I would highly recommend this vaccum if you want a powerful vacuum with a dust bag and a lot of flexibility.

Great performance
This is a very efficient machine. It really pulls the dog hair from my carpets. However, it is 21 lbs and therefore hard to handle.

Fantastic Product!
This vacuum is awesome. Anyone purchasing it won't be disappointed. It is a bit heavy for me but not unmanageable. Easy to assemble and easy to use. Thank-you.
