Hard as cement
Bought this based on having used Keratex hoof sealer and really was pleased on how it helped harden my horses hoof, also based on reviews on how this works great for abcess in hoofs, My results on a old burros with an abcess was NOT GOOD. The sealer said it would harden and become a protective seal, problem was the stuff hardened with a small amount making a pea like stone that only stuck in the hoof causing pain not comfort. The product was extremely hard to soften and work with, to the point where you had to work it with the heat of your hands. My hands hurt more than I think the abcess hurt my burro. I think this is a good product if you can apply it flat on hoof, but it isn't the easiest application. I also want to add that I applied the product, than wrap the hoof hoping to make a flat clean seal, when my farrier came, we found that the abcess had actually blown another hole out the hoof because the putty had sealed the first hole up. IF you try this product my advise is to check the hoof after a couple days if your animal is still limping, you may have the same problem I had, if not than maybe it worked for you.

This is the first 5 week cycle all summer that my horse kept his shoes on!
My horse has Shelly crumbly feet and it's a non stop battle to keep shoes on him. I started using keratex hoof hardener and the putty together. I filled all the chipped and cracked areas and the nail holes so they wouldn't be wedged open by sand and dirt. This is the first 5 week cycle all summer that he hasn't lost a shoe and the putty stays on for a good week so this little can will last a good year I'm guessing.

Works!
One of my old horses got a nasty abscess, and the vet opened it up to drain through the sole of his hoof. The vet packed and wrapped his hoof. We changed the wrap and kept his hoof clean until the hole started to close. We used this wax to protect the hole for several weeks until the sole of his foot grew out and the hole closed completely. This wax is easy to use. Just scoop out a stiff lump from the can, and massage it in your fingers until it softens. Use it to pack and seal the hole. Easy and durable. First photo is of the vet making the drain hole. Second photo is a couple weeks later, showing the hole (dark spot to the left of the frog). Our farrier used it after he trimmed our old horse's hooves. So, we're all happy with this product. (And the can will last for a very long time, like years.)

Keep dirt and moisture out of old and new nail holes
Okay, I have had many an equine. However, my main dressage dude has the worst hooves ever that have set hoof on our many farms. Well, if the farrier to HRM Queen Elizabeth swears by this product...I'll try it! To use: It is not a putty, but a wax type product. To use, scape thin 'sheets' from the tin- I actually used the top end of a wooden clothesline pin; warm at your fingertips and apply to any open hole in hooves. If anything, the hooves look neat and tidy with this product...as a GGdaughter of a British Victorian Lady, being proper and tidy is our manifest destiny!

Perfect to fill in hole from sole abscess
I bought this to fill in the hole after a large sole abscess drained. It worked perfectly. The stuff is hard when you first try to use it so warm it up the amount you need with your hand. You have to use it on very clean feet, so I would suggest soaking first to make sure it gets sealed well, but once it did it was PERFECT. It healed beautifully and stayed in the hole until it was pushed out as the hole closed.

Putty Dried Out - Defective Product?
Putty is dried out. Almost impossible to get out of container - even with a strong hand and heavy duty flathead screwdriver. Have to carefully heat putty to get it to stick to itself & form a somewhat malleable 1/2" ball. Have written to manufacturer. No response yet. My product was marked "NEW" but I think it's either old or that it is defective. It does seal the space to keep dirt & muck out so on that level the product is useful. It takes me about 25 minutes to get a workable amount of putty due to the need to extract putty from can, heat putty in a waterproof plastic bag (dunk in very hot water for 3 minutes), work the putty into a ball then into a strip to pack the hoof. I plan to consult with my farrier about switching to Sole Pack. nb: I am otherwise a Keratex product fan! Have used their other products & the products have been great. Think I got a bad container of Hoof Putty.

Useless; doesn't stay in.
Getting the product out of the tin is not the main issue (although, as others have suggested, it isn't easy). The issue is that it does not stay in! I have tried all the suggestions plus common sense (ensuring the putty is warm and suitably soft; ensuring the hoof is totally clean and dry; ensuring that my lovely, patient horse is left to stand in a clean, dry bucket, while the putty cures suitably; reduced the amount of putty so that it does not actually occlude with the ground) none of which have helped keep the putty in situ. It doesn't even last a day, and yesterday, it didn't even last 2 minutes after my horse walked off! Total waste of money! Thought it would be an improvement over hoof clay, couldn't have been more wrong. Back to hoof clay I go - easier to use, works for longer periods of time and much, much cheaper. Will persevere with the putty until it's used up, as loathe to waste this much money, and will amend if anything changes, but don't hold out any hope, as so far, it has been useless.

Great Hoof Putty
Just as described. Used to fill an old abscess hole in my horses hoof. Only little amount needed and gets very sticky but easy to spread if needed. Would buy again - hopefully I wont have too!

good
Bought this and struggled to get it out of the tin. Soon found a way around this by putting the tin in a bowl of boiling water and it was much easier to get out. Haven't had any issues with it in my horses hoof which is the most important thing!

Would thoroughly recommend
This putty does exactly what it promises - hardest part is getting it warm but once up to temperature it's easy to apply and stays in place amazingly well in the wettest and muddiest conditions. Would thoroughly recommend.

Good filler
Yes it's very hard and difficult to get out of the tin but once softened, it fills the holes and cracks in the hoof really well. Stays in too.
