This tool made my internet better

I had some Ethernet jacks in my house that I couldn't figure out where they went. So for years they didn't work. I had my mesh WiFi system on wireless backhaul, which isn't very good in a 2 story house. I finally got fed up and did some research and found this tool. With this paired with the VDV501 I was able to trace the jacks to specific wires in my closet. Turns out the AT&T guy did some splicing for the previous owner for DSL. I now have my Ethernet ports working and I'm on wired backhaul with better internet. I'm usually the tech guy for friends and family, so this tool will come in handy for future projects :).

Doesn’t meet expectations

Got this to replace another “wand” as I call them that was old and had been dropped too many times. Klein is my go to for most of my tools, however this was disappointing. My old wand I could just get close to a cable and I could hear the faint tone until I was touching the right one with then got loud. This one won’t do that. I have to be touching the conductors in order to hear a tone. I’m going to try another set of new batteries to see if that helps. As of the time of this review I wouldn’t recommend this to others.

Another great Klein Tool

I purchased the Klein Tools VDV500-123 Cable Tracer Probe Pro January 3, 2020 and it has worked very well so far. I have tested it with my Scout Pro 2 (VDV501-098) and my Scout Pro 2 LT (VDV501-108) both of which have a Tone Generator function, and it works with both of them. This Tracing Probe has a very solid feel to it and the "rubberish" sides keep it from slipping around in my hand (or slipping out of it). I removed 1 star because of the confusion created by Klein Tools description which strongly implies that this probe only works with the VDV500-063 which I thought I would have to buy just to use this probe. Luckily the description is wrong because I really don't need another Tone Generator. Since this is an "Analog" Tone Probe I'm pretty sure that it should work with most lower-end to middle-end Tone Generators.

Great add on to scout pro 3

If you have any of the Klein scout range with the toning function, this is a must have. The probe is powered by a 9v battery and is secured in a screwed compartment on the back. There is a quite powerful light on the front of it that is ultra handy when searching for cables in the back of patch panels. This can be turned on independently from the toning function. The volume level is controlled by two buttons and the highest levels is quite high and also can have a pair of headphones attached using a 3.5mm jack. The outer casing is very rugged and durable and does look like it will withstand a lot of use in all different kinds of environments. Overall, a very handy and well priced probe to pair with the Klein scout range.

Not really for professionals

I would say better buy little expensive one instead of this one, it does not work verywell in bundles of wires makes noise more than the tone and you only get tone when it touches your cable in joint. I bought 2 to test it as ranking was good one i returned and the one tested is just waste for me, even $15 toner set works better than this. Not really happy with purchase may return the product.

Missleading: Does not come with probe

Be careful ordering because it shows a picture of the probe but it does not come with it. It's one of those "read the small letters" thing.

limited use. Doesn't seem to add more than the test units already have. And disappointingly limited

Only good for testing exposed wires at end points. Can't detect signal along shielded cable say to identify which cable in a mess of cables is carrying a signal. Seems a bit useless since the Testing tool already tests end to end.
