Meridian is an all natural politic (spherical or egg shaped) pure aragonite substrate for all reef and marine aquaria. Meridian is the premium aragonite substrate for the reef aquaria. It's grain size is highly uniform (0. 25-0. 50 mm) and is ideally suited to reef inhabitants. It's chemical composition will assist in stabilizing calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH declines. Unlike competing "wet" Gravels, Meridian is sold dry: This bag contains 35% more gravel than a bag of wet gravel of equal weight. These "wet" Gravels are marketed to give one the impression that they contain living, microscopic animals when in fact they only contain common bacteria. Dry or wet, There are bacteria on every substrate. If one is concerned with shortening the aquarium cycle time for a new system, then the use of a product designed for that particular purpose would be more appropriate (such as sachem's stability).

Not quality Oolite.
My conclusion is that I do like the sand (so 2 stars)... After putting a lot of work in just to make it suitable. I love Seachem products but this is just not up to quality out of the bag. Don't buy this one. Seachem advertises it as being "fairly uniform in size". The Oolite itself is, but it's mixed in with so much crushed coral, shells, pieces of driftwood, literal garbage (plastic pollution), it's just false advertisement. I spent several hours (5+) just sifting the entire bag through a mesh siv to separate it all. I still couldn't get the smaller bit of etceteras out. I ended up with a couple kilos of excess material. It also needs to be washed very thoroughly. I washed the entire volume in a 5gal/20L bucket about 20 times before I was seeing somewhat clear water. After I've put all the effort in and it's in my tank, I do like it. But the only reason I stuck with it is because I'm stubborn and didn't want to spend more money.

which is fine as its not a live substrate
The substrate arrived wet, which is fine as its not a live substrate, but it plainly states it should be dry. Inside the box it was shipped in was cat/dog food. I do not know if this is true of all bags of substrate, but the one that was shipped to me contained 1-2 lbs of crushed coral within the substrate, implying a non-uniform grain size which this media is claimed to be. However after some elbow grease and a thorough sifting of the substrate while cleaning it, the substrate is now a uniform grain size of oolitic granules, that is softer and less powdery than the caribsea fine grain sand.

Mixed size sand for marine or african cichlids
Sand varies in size from ultra fine dust to # 3 coral sand. Sifted through a kitchen strainer you can obtain fine enough sand to run in a fluidized sand filter or don't strain it at all and use as a deep sand bed.

Needs to be washed heavily and better quality control
Lots of fine grain, very dusty. If you dont wash this you will regret it big time. And you will lose a noticable amount in the process. As well as way to many rocks from 1/4" to over 1". But otherwise the sand looks good.

I cannot recommend this product it is super light and coats everything ...
I cannot recommend this product it is super light and coats everything in the tank. I am also disappointed by the amount of tiny bits of colorful plastic that seem to be in the sand where ever they get the sand must have a problem with plastic...
