Disappointing JUNK
Bought this for my second grade daughter for Christmas. The long and short of it: this is absolute garbage because the focus mechanism is cheap, making it nearly impossible to focus and it will break. I have no problems with the body of the microscope being made of thin plastic. I can deal with the fact that it feels flimsy and cheap. I understand that it is a kid’s microscope and won’t have the higher end features you would find on the pro grade stuff. But this is beyond the pale. There are a few elements that are absolutely essential for a microscope of any kind and they don’t exist in this device. The platform is not secure. It flexes under the slightest weight which does not inspire confidence. The tiny LED lights, both above and below are wholly inadequate to look at anything that isn’t either completely flat (top light) or completely transparent (lower light). What is absolutely the worst part of this and renders the device nearly useless is the focus system. The platform that I mentioned rides on very flimsy rails and is both thin and weak which causes the platform not to sit perfectly perpendicular to the elevation mechanism and not perfectly parallel to the lenses. This leads to issues with focus especially at the top magnification. It also causes the whole focus system to grab and jump as you turn the focus knobs. This all but eliminates the ability for fine focus. When you’re focusing a microscope, THE WHOLE FOCUS PROCEDURE REQUIRES FINE FOCUS. Even the slightest adjustment to the knobs affects focus. Since the platform doesn’t sit properly, it doesn’t move smoothly and getting anything in focus is extremely difficult. Especially for the audience this was designed for. The gear that raises and lowers the platform as well as the geared bar it rides on are both cheap plastic. The geared wheel in particular is extremely poorly made. It is very thin and soft plastic. How do I know this? The focus broke completely within the first hour of my daughter and I using the microscope so I had to take it apart to see what was wrong. See, the issue with the whole way this focuses, is that because the platform doesn’t move smoothly is that you can’t use a light touch on the focus knobs. This leads to not really knowing if you’ve reached the top of bottom of the focus by feel alone. This leads to a kid who thinks that a little more pressure (VERY LITTLE) will get the focus to turn and this snaps the wheel that drives the focus. Seriously, the spokes that connect the gear to the shaft that turns is we’re millimeter thin soft plastic. I’m pretty handy and I’ve worked as a machinist with plastic, so I know how this stuff works. It required heat to re-melt the spokes to the bushing because the type of plastic used won’t take super glue. This was an adequate fix for a day or two after explaining to my daughter that she had to be very delicate. It has since broken again. The bottom line here is that this is just unacceptable. Plastic body, fine it’s a kid’s microscope and I can deal with that. Low light, fine I can add light to make up for it. But a microscope that doesn’t focus? It’s just going to go in the trash. At least make it focus. At least make the parts that focus the device out of quality materials. At least understand what makes a microscope a microscope and make it so it does what it’s supposed to do. Shame on National Geographic for putting their name on a 99% cheap plastic device that will just end up loading our landfills with useless junk. Shame on the manufacturers for thinking it was ok to build this in the first place. And shame on me for buying it. Please don’t make the same mistake I made. Look for something by else.

Poor quality
The lamp stop working after a while, there is no way to change it. It’s simply does not work without the lamp. If your kid is really into it I would buy a better quality microscope, that is what I am going to do, because my son really loves science and having a microscope was something he really wanted.

Bought for my 6 yr old.
Great for my 6 yr old son. He loved getting it for xmas and uses it constantly, we put everything under there! Food, playdoh, etc. I also bought him the box of rock/fossils from National Geographic though this comes with a decent amount to get started, and the included premade slides are great. It had a higher magnification range than other kids microscopes I was looking at. I also did not like that other brands were encouraging use of cell phones to use with theirs. This one is simple, basic, easy to use, and kid friendly. My only qualm is that it takes batteries ONLY. I would have liked a USB plug in option or something to save on batteries as he often forgets to turn it off.

This is entry level
This was a good product but I can tell you that it has not sold in a wild. When we got the box it had a thick layer of dust as if it had been forgotten in the corner of a warehouse. This being said it work very well. This is a good starting point for young kids to get initiated to a microscope. My 8 and 10 year old sons are happy with it.

Christmas present
I bought this for my 5 year old granddaughter and didn’t see the recommended age (7+) until it arrived. She’s very bright and my plan is to give it to her when she gets a little older.

Under The Microsvope
This is the perfect gift for a youngster who is interested in placing things like insects or flower petals under a microscope. Although lightweight and made of plastic it will serve the purpose of starting a youngster onto a path of being curious about science.
