The Nicholson long angle lathe hand file has a rectangular shape and single-cut American pattern teeth on both sides for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces in lathe work or bench filing. The file's single-cut American pattern teeth have long angles for rapid filing with a smooth finish when finishing, sharpening, and deburring. It has no teeth on edges to protect adjacent surfaces. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately). Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files. Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Looks good
It looks good but only time will tell if it lasts. There is no country of origin any place on file or package.

Not very impressive at all
Other reviewers have pointed out that these come complete with some black gunk packed into the teeth from the factory, and the safe edges aren't really safe, because the way they're cut leaves enough residual tooth on the edges to cause serious damage to any surface. My file was no exception. A file card removed the black gunk easily enough, and a few passes over a grinding belt left the edges truly safe. It might not be the same as Nicholson from back in the day, but it still seemed like a pretty good lathe file. I was really eager to try a true lathe file, because I had recently watched a video imploring me to experience the difference. Well, color me not impressed. The first thing I used the file to do was deburr the edge on a cast-iron face plate I had just faced off. I just did a little search to see if there is some standing advice out there about filing cast iron, and I found absolutely nothing to convince me that I was an idiot for trying this. Well, the cast iron pretty much destroyed the teeth on the file in just a few passes. I don't have any easy way of adding a photo, because I'm writing from my desktop, and I take pictures with my phone, but the teeth look like I took a hammer to them, and just bashed them in They're warped and mangled beyond all use. That whole side of the file is almost totally worthless now, and it took just a few seconds to destroy it. I'm really not impressed at all. I'm going to keep looking for a good lathe file. This is barely serviceable. The one remaining good side seems to be doing okay on mild steel and brass.

A pleasure to use!
A distinct pleasure to use a good quality, sharp file! It is a bit large for some of my projects, but perfect for others. I will need to shop for one about half size.

Works well enough
The file teeth aren't as well formed as my old "Made in USA" Nicholson files, but it works reasonably well. I've only used it on soft materials so far.

Perfect file for use on a lathe
Well made and sharp file. 45 degree filing teeth work well for lathe work. Remember to always use a file handle to protect yourself from kickbacks.

Good file, but it is surprisingly large for the work I do
This is a good sharp file, designed specifically for lathe work. I don’t reach for it as often as I should because it really is too big for my 9x20 lathe. Be careful about skating off to the side, with the sharp slant of the teeth.

I have a 14" lathe and the length is fine for that
Works well, even on aluminum if you keep it a little wet with WD-40. I did damage one face using it on hard stainless steel. I have a 14" lathe and the length is fine for that.

Excellent file for lathe work
I bought both the course and fine 14 inch lathe files. Excellent quality. It's so much more satisfying using one of these on a lathe rather than a 10 or 12 inch hand file. Single cut leaves a fine finish. Get the size 00, 5-3/4 inch Nicholson Metal Ferruled Wooden File Handle. Fits perfect and has a nice traditional look and feel.

Not as pictured
I was looking for a straight sided lathe file this is tapered and quite course. The sides of the file are not smooth either; there is overcut on the sides causing it to gough the adjacent surfaces when breaking edges on the lathe.

Seems good
Worth the price

Order this twice and both times received the wrong style of file
Both times received a rough cut half round file not a lathe file at all
