Embolism socks have a higher compression rating at the ankle, which acts as a ThromboEmbolic Deterrent aka "ted" style to prevent DVT (pooling of blood in the extremities) when limited movement, recovery, or bed confined patients must remain flat on their back or in recuperating positions following surgery. The higher ankle compression mitigates swelling and ensures proper blood flow while reducing the danger of clots traveling back to the heart, lungs, or brain. Graduated compression is incorporated into the leg profile, meaning the compression pressure (measured in mmHg) or "tightness" is gradually reduced from ankle to thigh in an even gradient over the calf. The open toe style can accommodate larger feet and allows for inspection of toes, while also allowing for sandal foot wear. Closed toe options have an oversize toe box meant to allow increased movement of toes, and ensure sensitive conditions such as hammer toes, blisters, bruising, bunions and corns are not irritated or compressed together.
