As good as bottled water
One of the 3 filters in our “Big Blue” system. Actually 4 filters when adding the Rusco 2” sediment filter. We purchased a cabin that has a well and the water unfiltered had a brownish color that stained the bathtub, shower curtain and toilet. It also had a metallic taste and slight sulphur smell to it. Other problems were the aireation screens on the faucets would clog up after a couple trips to the cabin and I can only guess what’s in the water heater. After reading for hours, watching numerous DIY videos and getting our water tested we decided to design and install our own filtration system. We first replaced the old pressure tank, the black plastic and galvanized pipe with new pressure tank, 1 1/4” sch. 80 PVC that ran from the pressure tank to the house. The water was still not that good. So we built a new well house around the well and installed the following in order. A Rusco 2” spin down sediment filter with a 250 mesh (50 microns) screen. This filter cleans itself out with the turn of a valve. Next three 20” Big Blue 1 1/2” housings with a Pentair DGD-505-20 dual gradient filter sediment filter (5 microns). Then a Pentair RFFE20-BB radial flow iron reduction filter (not sure of micron size), and finally a Pentair FloPlus-20BB Carbon filter (0.5 microns). What a HUGE difference. I can actually drink the water. Highly recommended!!! Helpful hint, oversize you sediment filter to 2” and at least match you pipe sizing with the Big Blues, You will not notice any pressure drop. Very satisfied, you get what you pay for...
We have city water and wanted a whole house filtration option. We went with two filters, one pre-filter Pentek DGD-2501-20 Spun Polypropylene Filter Cartridge (goes from 50 micron to 1 micron in one filter, used as a pre-filter, which will improve the life of this filter), and this 0.5 micron filter. You may ask yourself, why is this filter more expensive than something you get for half the price at a big box store. Well not all filters are created equally. Most carbon filters are 5 micron, this is 0.5 micron. The cheap filters can filter 5 microns at a trickle, open the faucet, and you are loosing microns, where this filter can filter 0.5 microns with the faucet all the way open at your maximum flow rate. This is a long life, high flow filter and the cheap ones will drastically cut down your flow rate and you will need to change them more often. Many filters will make claims on how good they are but the difference is this filter is (NSF/ANSI) standard 53 certified which means it's rated to remove protozoan cysts. Right now there are no other filters in the market that can provide this high of filtration with minimal reduction in flow rate. Be sure to compare GPH when purchasing. Usually, the higher the filtration, the lower the GPH (gallons per hour). The cheap filters claim to have great filtration, but this is at a very low GPH. This filter has the flow rate of a 10 micron filter, but it filters down to 0.5 micron (that and the NSF/ANSI 53 certification is the real difference) In a whole house filtration system, you need great filtration and high GPH and this filter has them both. That's what you are paying for when you spend the extra money on this filter. Since adding this filter, our water is excellent in taste (it's actually tasteless and better than any bottled water) and has no odor. Our showers are much more enjoyable and we feel extra clean bathing with such pure water. Itchy skin and dry scalp are a thing of the past. Our skin feels so healthy now that chlorine is removed from our bathing water. I can't express enough, the difference these filters will make in your life. The investment will improve your life and the life of your plumbing, plumbing fixtures, HVAC humidifier, hot water tank, rubber gaskets, and appliances. It will save you in the long run. ======= Update 1/29/2014: We are still very pleased with this filter. One pleasant surprise, the filter is great for watering the garden. We love to garden and have an extensive collection of Japanese maples, conifers, rare perennials, and several bonsai. Our garden responded so well to filtered water from this filter and they remained so healthy through the summer heat. After a Summer of watering and normal household use, its now time to change our filter, which lasted us 10 months (installed 3/2013). We could have stretched it to 1 year, because only a very tiny chlorine odor started to be present this week when we decided to go ahead and change the filter. This filter still remains a great investment! Update 2/1: We changed our filters today and were surprised by how much dirt the pre-filter caught and how clean the charcoal filter remained. We posted a picture so you can see how dirty the once white pre-filter was from our city water. I also posted a picture of our set up. Most of it was bought on Amazon via Prime, with the exception of the copper pipe and the shut-off valves. Here is a list if you are interested: Pentek 150296 SW-3 Wrench for #10 Big Blue Housings 2Culligan WBA HD950 Mount Bracket 2Pentek 150233, Big Blue, 1" In/Out, #20 Blue/Black, HFPP, w/ PR (they were out of 3/4 in-out, so we went with 1" and used adapters- probably not recommended, but the guy I had to install for me was under time constraints to wait for 3/4" to come back into stock). We think the initial investment was worth it because we love our clean water now. For the kitchen sink, we went a step further and purchased aWatts Premier 531130 Filter-Pure UF-3 3-Stage Water Filtration System . This takes it a bit far, as the water from the big blue is fantastic, but for the kitchen sink the watts takes it a small step further and removes several pages of chemicals, metals, elements, viruses, and bacteria. Since we have the big blue up-stream our Watts system filters lasts longer and does not have to work as hard to filter the water, it more less polishes it and puts a nice finishing touch on our filtration process. This may not be necessary and it is a bit overkill for most; but for us, we decided to take it a step further for our drinking water. This was our alternative to a reverse osmosis system and we also considered some very expensive commercial filtration systems. After doing extensive research and considering everything, we made the decision to go with everything above, because it was best for us and the combined systems best fit our home, lifestyle, maintenance commitments, and gave us the best bang for our buck. Update, we now use the Pentek DGD-2501-20 Spun Polypropylene Filter Cartridge, 20" x 4-1/2" as a prefilter. We find it provides a better flow rate than the pleated. We have noticed no change in water quality, just better pressure. It is also bacteria resistant too and cost less than the pleated pre filter.

I love it. Flow is great even with two showers ...
Bought a new-to-us house about 4yrs ago and discovered that the house had no PRV or filter system, and I'm not a fan of unfiltered water at street pressure, so I put in a PRV with a single 4x20 filter housing. At first I put in a basic filter, 30 micron I think, and over 3yrs we didn't experience much pressure drop. I realized that it wasn't filtering anything, did some research, and ended up buying this filter (FloPlus-20BB). I love it. Flow is great even with two showers running and laundry, but it's only good for about 3 months with a family of 5. I show essentially no pressure drop for 2 months, but at the end of the third month it drops from 55 to 25psi when we're running wide open. My system has 3 gauges, street, pre-filter, post-filter, so I can tell pretty quick when I need a replacement. As others have stated, all chemical taste in our water is gone. In our case the filter is clogging long before the carbon stops working, so maybe a pre-filter is in my future at $75 per filter. Every time I need to buy a replacement I research them again, and I have yet to find anything cheaper that gives as good a result. Open to suggestions!

Price Flux
Sounds like a good filter on paper, but it is a lot lighter than a regular carbon filter, so we will see how it performs... But whats going on with the price on Amazon? I know many things on amazon.ca are way out of proportion, but this went from $35 when I had it in my cart when deciding on the order, to a few days later being $85, when I ordered and hesitated, but now it is $152?! Will see where it is when it comes time to re-order.. but will probably go with a regular carbon filter at that time for around $40.. a few psi extra pressure loss is not a big deal for us, and likely for many consumers. In fact it would probably mean a savings in water by using less water to shower and using the sinks for washing...

Greatly reduced pressure drop
Ordered product as it was supposed to be a higher flowing charcoal block filter.. excited to try it and use as a regular replacement. I have a drilled well producing 7 gallon per minute... pressure set to minimum 45psi and pump kicks on to bring it up to 65 psi. I previously used and will for now be reinstalling the big blue 510 filter. There was a noticeable drop n pressure. I was expecting some.. but the pressure before with the 510 was exceptional so loosing a few PSI but no where this much. The shower which was a joy to have.. especially compared to our other house which is on town water. I am guessing a 10 PSI drop easy.... but aside from that estimate... there was a huge noticeable difference in Pressure.. so I cannot recommend this product based on its flow rate being so poor. As for reducing the iron earthy taste... it actually did do that, but it was no where near that bad to warrant the negative in pressure drop.

Whole house filter
Thin plastic wrap was open at both ends, maybe not a huge deal. Second one purchased, flow rate considerably lower after about 6 months of service on City of Edmonton water. Helps remove the chlorine and ammonia smell.

good value!
Work every bit as well as the much more expensive ones that I bought previously!

Filtre à eau central
Filtre à eau super qualité. Ne RÉDUIT PAS la pression malgré une filtration très fine de 0.5 micron. Je le recommande.
