The Pferd fine cut flat hand file has a handle, a rectangular shape, and double-cut American pattern teeth on both sides for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The file tapers slightly toward the point in width and thickness to ease access into slots. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on each side for rapid material removal, and single-cut teeth on the edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. An ergonomic plastic handle helps provide secure gripping. Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang. Pferd manufactures abrasives and cutting tools for grinding, finishing, and cutting. The company, founded in 1799 in Germany, has its U.S. headquarters in Leominster, MA. It meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

Good quality file, comfortable handle and fast steel removal.
I bought the coarse 12" file for rough cutting axe edges and it seems to be holding up quite well. Since the demise of the beloved USA made Nicholson Black Diamond files (the Mexican made files are crap), I needed a quality alternative and, so far at least, this seems to be a viable option. The coarse double cut removes steel quickly in draw and push cuts and gate swings mark out the area to be sharpened very well. The handle is possibly the most comfortable one I've ever used. I like the coarse file so much, I just ordered the "medium" (Second Cut) 12" file to follow it up and may get the fine one as well. I haven't used this file long enough to judge longevity yet but so far it's looking like a good alternative to the vintage Black Diamonds.

Wow!!
I restore axes. The old Plumb axes are made of the hardest steel known to man. This file sharpens Plumb steel like nothing I’ve ever used. $$ well spent.

An average file
Good word of mouth reviews on online forums, but these don't seem to live up to the hype. Wish I'd just ran down to the local tool store or hardware and bought a cheapo that was straight. These are straight, give them that (checked it on a straightedge). But they the quality doesn't seem to be there like I was hoping.

Too soft. For soft material only.
Description on Amazon lacks detail what material this file should be used with. On the manufacturer website, this file is only used with soft material.

Cuts like a maniac
Very sharp, hard file. Cuts great but is very, very coarse. If used to sharpen tools you may be faced with a lot of filing from a single cut to get rid of the file marks left by this brute. Can’t beat it for fast metal removal though.

Top quality files
Beautiful files. I've bought a few files from this company and they seem really high quality. Super hard and nice finish on them. They chew up any metal you throw at them. Highly recommend.
