They are easy to replace. They can become brittle with age and UV exposure and break, rendering the window channel balance disabled. They actually engage and push the channel balance top guide, moving the balance with the window. They mount to the top side edges of the moving vent, 2 per window. Sash cams are used in hung windows that use channel balances.

Old windows, the right pieces.

This was the exact piece I needed for my window channel balance. The annoying thing about buying a condo or home with old equipment is that there wasn’t a universal standard. If your home is like mine, with original windows, take the channel balance out and see the number imprinted on it. That will be the key to determine which sash product you need. This is ONLY the top piece which keeps the window from going too high. Be sure to buy two since you will need to replace both.

Will not work for my windows

There are some protrusions on the back that are not shown on the product picture. The unseen portion of the part is not flat. These protrusions make the the part unusable in my window. There is also no hole for the mounting in the top portion of the part. Again, you can't see this in the product picture.
