Works, and is build tough. Mouthpiece cap is very loose, which is a serious shortcoming.
A personal water filter is an important piece of survival gear, for camping or a home emergency or "bug out" kit. This filter seems to be appropriate for all these situations--it's short, albeit wider than other filters, and is made of a very tough plastic. Fragility is not an issue with this one. It works well. Insert the end of the filter into water, and gently suck up through the mouthpiece. It might take longer than you'd like, but water will come through and you will be able to drink. If you can procure some vinyl tubing that fits over the water inlet on the filter bottom you won't have to lean over so much when drinking. Or, attach a standard plastic bottle containing suspect water, raise the bottle until water is at the filter inlet, and drink. I have two peeves with this filter. First, it has threads to accept a standard plastic bottle (think soda bottle). You have to be very careful when using bottles attached to filters, because if the seal between the bottle and the filter unit ever fails it'll leak. And if you have raised the filter-bottle combination above horizontal, contaminated water is going to potentially run down the filter and hit you in the face near the mouth, leading to contaminant exposure. The second is the cap that covers the mouthpiece is not secure; it's way too easy to dislodge and open it. The mouthpiece is the one thing that you want to keep as clean as possible, so this loose cap is a very serious shortcoming.

Great for go-bags
My husband and I (and the dogs) each have an emergency "go-bag" we can grab at a moment's notice (after a few years of living in areas with high potential for disasters). He has a Life Straw in his, but I wanted to try this so I could also have my own. I love how small it is...it adds very little weight to my bag and takes up almost no room. It works as far as I have been able to tell. I'm immunocompromised, so I'm not going to go suck up some rainwater off the ground unless it's an emergency, but the water at our house in Arizona tastes awful and gives me GI issues (I don't drink it unless it's filtered), but this makes it taste significantly better and I didn't experience any of the usual GI distress after drinking with this over a few days. It's easy to use because I can just screw it onto a water bottle--I have a couple in my bag, and I made sure they fit this filter so I have them as options. It's pretty hard to drink through these, but it is no harder with this one than with my husband's Life Straw. I wouldn't want to rely on this long-term, but it's much quicker than boiling water and seems to work. My only issue with this is that it's made in China, so I have concerns about it working as advertised. However, we do have the other as a fall-back, so I feel better about packing this one for myself. I would order another of these, but I wouldn't rely solely on them in case the manufacturing process isn't as precise as it is for those made in Switzerland.

Filters well but hard to suck through
I used this on a trip to the Caribbean. I brought an empty water bottle with me to make sure it was sturdy and would fit the threads of this device. Some water bottles are just flimsy and I wouldn't trust them with this. The "non-potable" water I drank through this filter tasted good and didn't make me sick. The only thing is that the drinking through the filter was much much harder than sucking through a straw. It works in a pinch, but I wouldn't use it unless necessary. After sucking through the filter for a bit, I had to release the vacuum in the bottle and keep going. It was not easy to stay hydrated using this filter. To dry it, I left it standing on paper towels to drip dry.
