Our patented, environmentally sound manufacturing process turns post-consumer recycled paper into superbly strong boards that weigh 62% less than particle board. zBoards are just as solid and structurally sound as any engineered wood furniture, yet they’re made from one of the simplest materials ever – paper. We designed these marvelous building boards to be versatile and easy to assemble, and came up with a new way to put the pieces together. Strategically placed super-strong adhesive strip is the answer – all you do is peel off the protective covering, stick the blocks together, and you’re done. If you’re creating your own design with zBoards, you can also use screws or hardware if you like. zBoards are water-resistant and easy to clean. They come in different colors and both light and dark wood-grain designs, so you have options to fit your decor. They’re also available in white, which makes a perfect canvas for your own imagination. The World's Easiest Assembly In our packages, you won’t find mysterious collections of screws and nails, or complicated diagrams and instructions. That’s because you can put our unique zBoards together without tools or hardware. Super-strong 3M brand adhesive strips let you fit the pieces neatly together. Just peel, stick and you’re done. Honest. See the assembly videos on our website. You can buy our thoughtfully designed step-by-step furniture kits. And because they’re so easy to assemble and so versatile, you can also mix and match zBoards to fulfill your furniture fantasies. Since Way Basics products are modular, it’s easy to add on to your creation if you need more storage or want to use it for a different purpose. Then paint, wallpaper, or embellish them any way you like as well. (Kids love to decorate their own Way Basics stuff.) That’s something you definitely don’t get with most assembly-required furniture. They're Talking About Us You may have seen Way Basics discussed on your favorite television morning show, your newspaper, or seen a review on a popular website. Our revolutionary easy eco modular furniture is making waves and has been seen on: MSNBC, ABC, Kids Today, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Daily Candy, Apartment Therapy to name a few. Frequently Asked Questions Q: What do I do with the backer board that came with my furniture? A:When you’re done assembling your Way Basics furniture piece, place the backer board at the rear of your furniture. This sturdy paper board is the essential framing piece that holds it all together. It’s designed to adhere neatly, stabilize your furniture and create a finished look. Q: How can I customize my Way Basics Furniture? A: The possibilities are endless! We designed our modular building blocks to inspire creativity and possibility. Here are a few ideas: * zBoard dividers are available to create organization and playful possibilities. * Stack different bookshelves in different colors next to each other to create you own design. * Add stickers! * Mix and match zBoards of different hues to add a charge of color to any room. * Build a multi-colored bookshelf or insert multiple zBoard dividers for a great look. * Rest a horizontal zBoard on top of any two of our lower pre-configured pieces and voila! You’ve got a table or desk. * Get fancy and spice it up with casters or wheels to make your furniture mobile. (you will need a screwdriver to affix casters) * Visit the Design Gallery on waybasics.com for more ideas! Q: Made from paper...is it strong? How much weight can zBoards hold? A: It’s very strong indeed! zBoards are constructed through our patented process and are made from multiple, overlapping layers of paperboard and corrugated paper that combine to withstand tremendous pressure. We like to describe the zBoard as carbon fiber of paper. For instance, our founder weighs 195 pounds and when he stands on our Cube it can easily bear his weight. zBoards are just as strong as common particle board constructed furniture. Our furniture is designed for use in common storage, home, and work purposes. With Way Basics furniture, you can easily add a divider/support zBoard and hold up to 100 pounds per shelf for your really big and heavy things. We recommend adding divider/support zBoards starting from the lowest shelf to support the heaving books or objects above. Q: Is your packaging recycled too? A: Yes, even our packaging is recycled. We use materials made from 90% post-consumer waste. Since packaging is just to safely transport and protect your furniture, we’d rather keep it basic, recycled, and completely recyclable to ease the load on our environment. Please reuse or recycle your packaging when you’re done with it, too. Thanks! Q: How strong is the double-sided adhesive tape? A: Very, very strong. We use only 3M industrial-strength heavy-duty adhesive tape on our products. To take full advantage of all that sticking power and get optimum adhesion, make sure your bonding adhesive surfaces are clean, dry, and properly joined. It works best if you put together your furniture in a room that’s between 70° F to 100° F (21° C to 38° C). This super-tape’s bonds get stronger during the first 24 hours, so we recommend that you let your furniture sit in place for the first day. Q: Are zBoards water resistant? A: Yes, the exterior layers of the board are treated with a water resistant material just like other finished wood veneers. If water gets on the zBoard surface, it will dry (though of course it’s best if you wipe it up like all spills). You’ll want to keep water away from the furniture’s edges and corners where it’s a little more vulnerable to moisture. Again, we hate to sound like your mom, but if water spills, just wipe it up! Q: Does Way Basics furniture off-gas? A: No, Way Basics furniture does not "off-gas". Off-gasing occurs in the manufacturing process of particle poard and MDF in which various types of formaldehyde are used. There is no formaldehyde in our products. Have no fear, our products don't pass gas! Q: What are the differences among zBoards, particleboard, plywood, solid wood, or MDF? A: zBoards are made almost entirely (99%) from post-consumer recycled paper, and do not consume additional natural resources like trees and the enormous amounts of water needed to make virgin paper. While very strong, paper zBoards are made from the lightest form of wood byproduct. Particleboard is made from wood particles (like wood chips, sawmill shavings, or sawdust), which is bound together with synthetic resin or other materials, then pressed and extruded. It is fairly heavy. Plywood is engineered from thin sheets of wood veneer in layers that are glued together. It’s fairly heavy and expensive. It also means that trees must be chopped down to harvest the wood. Solid wood is made directly from lumber, which means chopping down thousands of trees which adds to the continuing deforestation of large areas of our planet. Solid wood furniture is heavy and generally very expensive. MDF stands for medium density fiberboard, a variety of particleboard. It’s made by breaking down softwood into small wood fibers and particles that are then bound together with wax and resin. The panels are formed by applying high temperature and pressure. This manufacturing process uses lots of energy resources and puts contaminants into the environment.

Very Pricey Considering Materials & Difficulty to Get Square/Straight
I ordered both the 2-shelf cube, and the 2-shelf rectangle units. I got the 2-shelf cube last night, and I have to say that I did not have any trouble with assembly. I am a paper crafter, so lining up edges with sticky adhesive where you get one shot at it is old hat for me. And the dowels lined the walls up great. Even though I was careful and deliberate, it still took less than 5 minutes, which was just AWESOME to me. One recommendation I did not see in other reviews: DO A DRY RUN ASSEMBLY FIRST, BEFORE EXPOSING ANY TAPE. This way, you will be able to see if there is anything in the little pre-drilled dowel holes that might keep the pieces from sitting flush. You will also be able to better see how to line up the back panel straight. Also, you really should put these together on a flat, hard surface, like a wood floor. As I did my dry run with the unit, I noticed that the back panel piece was too long. When flush with the bottom, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch would stick up from the top. No problem for me, I simply assembled flush with the bottom, then ran an exacto knife carefully along the top edge a couple times, using a self-healing cutting mat underneath. It's all pretty now :-) As I assembled each piece onto the next, I tried not to lower the piece into place until it was lined up. Then I slid it slowly onto the tape, and pressed and held it there--you need to press straight down into the tape, be very careful and don't wobble the piece. Once I had all the walls put together firmly, I actually very gently set the unit on its front, so I could better line up the back panel. Also, putting the back panel on like that enabled me to push the panel straight down onto the tape and hold it there firmly for a few seconds, to let it get a better grip. All in all the assembly was fast and easy. I bought these shelves because they perfectly fit the sizes of the places I will be using them. I am putting one on each side of my monitor on the top of my desk, then will find a board to go across the top, to have more space to organize my stuff. (I wish this company offered just straight flat boards--I could use one about 60" long above my units!) My shelf seems pretty sturdy so far, but it is sitting on top of my desk, at the back, against a wall...so it is not going to be leaned on or anything potentially troublesome like that. I can't see using these reliably in any situation other than having them supported like that. I would bet that if you were to hammer little brads through the back panel, into the sides and bottom, that might help. But this product should be improved by the manufacturer, not the end-user, especially for this price. Now, for the bad news: even with the dowels and careful, thoughtful, assembly, my shelf unit does not appear straight/square. My husband measured and found what appears to be slight warping on the top and bottom pieces, which just adds up by the time you get it assembled. I also think that not having any alignment guides for the back panel creates a situation where you can accidentally adhere the panel at a slant, which doesn't help. I've cut some cardboard strips from the packaging to set under one side, and that will do the trick for me. I paid like $80 for these two 2-shelf units, because they were the perfect size for my needs, but that is just way too much for furniture that is so hit and miss with assembling square. (Even if the company can do better with that problem, it's still not worth more than $20 for this 2-shelf cube.) And like others have mentioned, the woodgrain covering paper peels back easily. I saw it happening in a place that's now covered after assembly, and I had not touched it in that area, so it was coming off by itself. If that piece had folded over itself as I was assembling, it would have prevented the pieces from sitting flush. I do have to say that everything was packaged beautifully...maybe that's where all the cost is! Bottom line, these work for the modular space I wanted to create. If you find something else that can work for your space, I'd go for that.

Need to return this (Wait they sent a new one)
I should have known this was going to be a piece of crap when it is shipped from and sold by Diapers.com. It was easy to put together and had simple instructions. To put it together took no time at all, the same could be said for the time it took to fall apart. I was using this as storage for my vinyl LPs and it looked very nice. I had just finished putting my last record into place and took a step back to admire my now legitimate looking collection when it all collapsed in on itself. If you are looking for storage for lightweight objects, this might be for you, but if it is going to hold something heavier, I would go with something that isn't held together by adhesive. I gave this two stars because I assume not everyone will have this product destroyed the moment they are done putting it together. It does look nice and is easy to put together! EDIT: Okay. I can admit when I was wrong. They sent me a new one and I skeptically pieced it together. 'Yeah right, like this is going to hold,' I said. Well guess what? So far so good! I have the same amount of weight on the top shelf as I did the last time and it is holding up fine. My only complaint is that the back piece is 2 colors, so like an idiot I put the 'woodgrain' on the outside so now the white part is showing in the shelves. That one is on me (but it would be nice if they could idiot-proof it)

Its value depends on your thought.
I bought several of these bookcases, for their idea of producing simple furniture with recycled materials. It is easy to be assembled. But it is fragile. The boards are glued and don’t touch each other perfectly. I used transparent tape to wrap them and didn’t put heavy things on them. Its value depends on your thought. If you like to collect a bookcase produced with recycled materials, it is the choice. Otherwise, it isn’t.

ABSOLUTELY NO AROMA OF OFF-GASSING CHEMICALS
Before I made this purchase I read many reviews knocking the quality of this product. I tried it anyway because I'm familiar with paper-based boards used for furniture construction (used to do it myself in art school), and I wasn't going to compare the finished product to wood. This is a moderate weight material. It's sturdy enough to be used for storage or for display. It's not to be moved around, knocked around, or handled roughly. I probably wouldn't use it in a kid's room for toy storage, for example, and expect it to last a decade. It was fun to assemble, and the alignment was as accurate as a comparable piece made from wood press-board. For me, the most important feature was the absence of noxious off-gas aromas. If I buy a do-it-yourself construciton in wooden pressboard, I have to unpack it and let it air-out outside for 3-4 weeks before I can get near enough to it to put it together (becuase of the formaldehyde aroma--it's just too much for me). After unpacking the Way Basics product, I did not have to wait one minute before I brought it into the house and put it together. After assembly, it went directly into the space where I needed it for storage (one of the most commonly used rooms in the house), and I felt completely confident that it was completely safe to be breathing the air there.

Cheap but does the job
I ordered this bc I needed a space filler for a specific dimension. Comes with 3m tape on it but I needed to use wood glue to secure it. The tape wasn’t strong enough to keep it together. Doesn’t require nails or screws and it’s held together with small wooden pegs. It truly doesn’t stay together with what it comes with. It’s great for what it is tho. Just save yourself from a little bit of headache and use woods glue when you assemble it bc it’s annoying to have to go back later and repair it.

Good value
This unit is not very sturdy, but it is exactly what it is advertised to be. I put it together with no tools in less than five minutes. It looks nice enough, and I did not need or want a heavy bookcase, so this fit the bill for me and is a very good value. You would not want to sit on it or stuff it full of heavy books, but it does great as a light-duty shelf.
