Britain's most pressing need was for aircraft and in 1940, the British Purchasing Commission approached US aircraft manufacturer North American Aviation, to produce license-built Curtiss P-40 fighters for the RAF. Slightly indignant at the prospect, North American officials proposed to build a totally new aircraft for the Royal Air Force, which would be superior to the P-40 and more suitable for their needs. So impressive was their pitch, the British agreed to their proposal and signed a contract for the new aircraft. Unfortunately, time was very much against the North American design team, as Britain desperately needed aircraft without delay. Work on the new project began immediately. What North American Aviation achieved with their new aircraft design was nothing short of astonishing. Incorporating highly advanced new features and the very latest manufacturing techniques, the prototype aircraft (NA-73X) rolled out of their hangar on 9thSeptember 1940, only 120 days after the contract had been signed. The first flight of the aircraft took place just 47 days later and other than the usual issues associated with a first flight, the aircraft showed great promise and was a clear vindication of the confidence North American Aviation had in their design capabilities. Delivered as ordered on time
This was purchased for my son to use in a school project. It arrived on time and was what we expected. While it seems sad to set the bar at that level, there have been enough times when things ordered over the internet were late or misrepresented that I wanted to positively let people know that (at least in this case) this supplier delivered quickly and as described. :) As far as the model is concerned. It was at a level that a attentive pre-teen can do it without meaningful supervision, and a normal pre-teen will screw up without supervision. :)

So so
Stickers were old fashion where they had to be wet down to apply. Definitely not for a first timer

OK for the price point
Not bad overall for a plastic model, but material is too thin and breaks easily. Should be a bit more durable, even at that price.

Great model
This was a present for my dad who has taken up model building in retirement. He really seems to have liked this one. Lots of extra parts allow for different build set ups and configurations. Lots of really tiny parts though mean it may not be the best for beginners, but for the price why not give it a try regardless.

Recommended P51d in 1/48
This is a kit that Airfix didn’t have to make, given that your 1/48 P-51D has been well represented by the likes of Hasegawa, Tamiya, Revell, Italeri, Hobby Boss and Meng. Buyers are already spoiled for choice of well engineered kits with plenty of building options, so it’s unexpected to see Airfix join a very crowded marketplace. However, it’s fair to say that Airfix has done a brilliant job and has laid down a statement of intent that it intended to produce the definitive Mustang, at least until someone else decides to have a crack at it. Detail is exceptional, with very fine moulding seen everywhere. There’s been criticism from some quarters as to the depth of the panel lines and rivets, but the real article had filler applied to wings and body to smooth the airflow, so there’s no reason why the keen modeller shouldn’t do the same. The slightly odd fit of the wing box, tail structure and fin makes sense if you’re looking to release variants in the near future (much like Airfix’s Meteor in the same scale). Filleted and non-filleted fins, factory specific variants, even the wing shape of later Mustangs will be easily catered for without massive retooling, thus giving Airfix a chance to market some niche variants of this well known aircraft. I’ve yet to fully assemble this kit, but early impressions are very good indeed. While I’d rather that Airfix turned its attention to some unsung planes in this scale (Hawker Tempest, Westland Welkin and Whirlwind, a decent 1:48 Typhoon and the Canadair Sabre), the prolific nature of scale Mustangs means that there are plenty of comparative kits from rival manufacturers which will be found wanting. The only criticism that I can justifiably levy is that there are only two kit options out of the box, the more colourful of the two is quite challenging on the eye. If you’ve a spare set of decals from another manufacturer’s P51d then you’ve more options open to you, but having said that Airfix’s decals are excellent.

Parts didn’t fit great together
One of the flaps was bent and some of the pieces were a poor fit
