"Air raid Pearl Harbor. This is not a drill." On the morning of December 7, 1941 just before 8:00 am, IJN launched their attack on Pearl Harbor. Although transmitted, a formal declaration of war wasn't received yet. Taking the US Navy by surprise, the Imperial Japanese Navy began bombing the US Military base strategically in three planned waves of attack with their carrier based fighters. The first wave consisted of 183 airplanes with the objective of destroying carriers and cruisers in an effort to immobilize retalliation as they continued a coordinated effort to take control over the Pacific's resources. The second wave launched 171 airplanes, including 36 Mitsubishi Zero A6M2s(including this one), 78 Aichi Val dive bombers and 54 Nakajima Kate bombers. The third wave was never initiated. The attack was over 90 minutes after it started killing 2,403 military and civilians and wounding 1,143; all of their deaths and injuries were considered as non-combatants. The following day, the United States formally declared war on the Empire of Japan and entered the ware againt Germany and Italy on December 11th. The unexpected attack became the largest enlistment event for the US Navy.
