This is more like Level 2 or even 3 in terms of painting

Stout, medium size, semi-scale model. Finishing the model to appear prototypical is, in my opinion, beyond Skill Level 1. It requires three paint colors plus the base coat primer (I used white). You need to do some sharp masking to delineate the red fins from the white body tube, and the yellow/red transition of the upper body tube. And you need to plan your painting sequence very carefully. This is more like Level 2 or even 3 in terms of painting. The painting will take patience, many light paint coats and about half a day. Additionally, I am disappointed with the decals - they are not classic water-slide, rather, stick-on adhesive. Unlike water slide, which you can move around a bit on a thin water film to get precise positioning, you basically have one shot to align these precisely. Two of them are enormous and wrap all the way around the body tube - it can be difficult to get air bubbles out from beneath decals this large. And they leave a large, thick, clear film that is noticeably a different color than the white body tube. In summary, the build is straightforward and Level 1...the prototypical finishing is NOT Level 1.

Price was right!

I like the larger bodied model rockets. Don't like the skinny ones! These are large enough!

Hard to screw up.

It's a nice rocket. Nothing special. If your familiar with rocket building than you get what you expect. I'm never quite sure what to make of the skill levels. This is a level 1 but you need to attach the fins yourself. I always thought level one you should have a base with the fins molded. Other than that, it's pretty simple and easy. I don't ever follow the paint/decal schemes. This one I actually gave to my kids to paint.

Fin falls down no hole to lock fins into

Good fun to build and easy the only hard part is for the fins there is no hole in the body tube for it to to lock into so when the glue is drying it is hard to keep the fin from falling of or it will fall down

Nice scale kit from Estes

Got this kit after helping my son build his from a starter set. Easy build with good instructions. I liked his so much I got me 2 more kits for future builds. I even decided to build a large scale Level 1 version. If you like the looks then you won't be disappointed with the build or flying. Only bit of advice I can give is to replace the cheap Estes version of their shock cord with a good one from a hobby store or craft supply. Make it at least 3 times the body tube.

The Estes Patriot is an excellent kit for someone just starting out in scale model rockets. It's surprising large, easy to build and impressive on the launch pad....especially painted in the shown prototype colors.
