PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Planet Bike Protege 8.0 Bike Computer ABOUT PLANET BIKE In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

Good, but not perfect
I used this on a couple of Bacchetta Giro recumbent bikes (20 and A26). The wire to the sensor is just long enough for this. It might get a little tight if you are tall and have your handlebars set high, but I have a few inches to spare. I like this because I can see all of the parameters I want to monitor on one screen: current speed, trip distance, average speed, trip time, and maximum speed. I have no use for displays that scroll or cycle through readings. I also prefer a wired system like this so that interference and connecting are not an issue, as well as avoiding extra batteries and extra battery drain. There are a few issues I have with this, most of them minor. 1) The "button" mechanism where you slide the computer in its mount to change the display is not great. It is a little awkward compared to a normal button. It can also get stuck, so that a push to change the display turns into a "push for 3 seconds to clear the trip data" instead. Since it always comes out of sleep mode in the first display, and I always want to use the third display, this gives me several opportunities per ride to clear my trip odometer and statistics. 2) It appears that the time it takes to detect that I have stopped is not removed from the trip statistics. This means that average speeds are a little lower if you make many stops. 3) The display update interval is about three seconds. I know that I could have written the firmware to get this down to one second or less. This is fairly minor, but can be annoying. 4) A second one of these that came with a bike I bought has trouble with the entire computer being reset unexpectedly. This doesn't happen often, and may be associated with getting wet; I haven't completely figured it out yet. A fresh battery did not solve it. 5) On both of my computers, the display often has a dark blemish at the bottom, probably at the ground connection. This is cosmetic, as it does not obscure the characters on the display. I think it may only happen for a while after powerup. 6) The setup routine is tedious and prone to errors. This is probably unavoidable, and should be rarely encountered. 7) Data and calibration are not saved through a battery change, so you need to be very sure to save your calibration setting and to write down your odometer reading before changing the battery. In the case of my second unit which has reset problems, this means that chunks of the odometer reading are lost because it resets without warning. Overall I can recommend this, and given the lack of options in wired computers, I would probably buy it again.

4-line display is excellent; button design less-than-optimal
The primary selling feature of this computer is the unique multiline display. I love having all relevant info available at one glance without having to mess with buttons while riding. The text seems large enough to read at a glance. I didn't see other products with this design, so I definitely recommend the product for this feature. The only shortcoming in this product's design is that the function button (used to reset trip meters or switch the 4th display line between clock, averages, etc.) is integrated into the housing such that you push the entire casing forward to activate it. What that means is that the entire computer literally slides in the mount. The rubbing plastic action isn't particularly smooth, and I wish they had just put a regular button on the lower bottom edge of the housing instead. This strange design does leave the impression that the computer is not held as securely as one would like, although I have not observed any danger of the computer working loose from the mount during my 1 month of road/path riding. So, unless you find another product with as good a display, I would not consider this shortcoming a deal-breaker.

Reliable and convenient functions
Have one of these on another bicycle. Tried other models but they had problems registering (for a road bicycle). This model has worked steadily for over 800 miles total. I like being able to see the total distance traveled and the trip time without having to change modes, and being able to read those numbers while moving.

The unit resets very easy, 2
Problems; 1. The unit resets very easy, 2. the display is not very intuitive, most resets to "0" instead of blank witch is easier to read. 3. The sensor should come with tw levels of raisers to accommodate mounting on MTB and road bikes i had to reduce the gap between the sensor and the magnet 3 times before it started working, still i don't know if the distance is correct. 4. No back-light making the unit impossible to read at night Pro; 1. Great price. 2. Lots of metrics; you get distance, time, speed, max speed, average speed, a arrow pointing up or down to indicate if you're traveling above or below the average speed, time of day ( always on ) odometer ( total distance ) adjustable to all wheels circumference. 3. built is good and design is appealing, it doesn't look out of place or cheap.

This was a replacement for one that stopped functioning after 3 yrs. The new one is great, just programmed it and slid onto the previous mount. Very fast delivery on an international shipment.
